(although I'm not sure I would " hammer at the root " ;-) ) Sorry, anyway... what I've found useful for tic-ing is to needle down the Hua Tou Jia Jie Points. I don't use all the needles at the same time but use 3 or 4 at the top, take them out, do the next ones down and continue through until the lumbar. This also works well for Restless Leg however with more concentration on the lower.
