Guest guest
hi sharon as i understand it, with spina bifida the spinal cord can become tethered in the lumbar and sacral regions giving rise to very tight and contracted tendons in the ankles and feet. this is probably what is causing your patients feet rotate inwards and the toes to curl up. an operation to de-tether the cord is often recommended. the patient i treat with this condition has had the operation which was a success in terms of releasing her feet from torsion but has led to much increased sensitivity in the lumbar and sacrum. all the best jason ======================================== Message date : Jan 05 2005, 04:04 PM From : To : " Chinese Medicine " Copy to : Subject : spina bifida and toes Hi All, Is anyone on the list experienced with spina bifida? If so is it typical in an 18 yr old male with a mild spina bifida, to have splayed legs, with such ankle and foot rotation that he is walking on the metatarsal phalangeal joint with all toes curling high off the ground? He must be having considerable weight bearing on to the metatarsal phalangeal joint of the little toe so that he now has a hard callus on each foot, however I can still feel the joint with moderate palpation. Or is this something else? He came in looking for acupuncture for 'eczema' (his diagnosis) along the lung channel of the right arm. His history includes MVA as well horse accidents. He now carries his head to the right side (since he thinks the age of about 12) and his pelvis is also raised on the left side in the area of the sacro iliac joint (left side) the soft tissue feels spongy and is tender to palpate in the area of both the GB and UB channels over the sacrum. There is also considerable pain on the top of shoulders and medial to the scapula, especially the left with palpation, however he says he has little awareness of pain without palpation. Head rotation to the left showed a strong tendency flex the neck side ways as much as rotate it. He had previous received acupuncture (4-5 Rx), with good success, by a medical doctor for the eczema, in another town where he attended bordering school. There is a history of some asthma as well. Pulse: Lung is the most deficient position. Best wishes, -- Version: 7.0.300 / Virus Database: 265.6.8 - Release 3/01/2005 http://babel.altavista.com/ and adjust accordingly.
