Chronic Cough Case

I have a male patient, mid-fifties, with a fifteen year history of cough. I've

treated his knee pain successfully (he's back to playing tennis without needing

large doses of Ibuprofen to get through it) but the cough has been stubborn.

I diagnosed him with phlegm heat in the lungs, and have been using Bei Mu Gua

Lou San (Fritillaria and Trichosanthes Fruit Powder) with the addition of xing

ren and pi pa ye (Semen Pruni Armenica and Folium Eriobotryae Japonicae). While

his tongue is a little less red, there has been no change in the cough. I

briefly tried him on Sha Shen Mai Men Dong Tang (Glehnia and Ophiopogonis

Decoction) since his tongue, but no other symptoms, speak of a yin deficiency,

but that made the cough worse.

He tends to have a stuffy nose with a post nasal drip. Throat is dry and

scratchy, and his voice is weaker than it used to be. No tightness in chest, the

symptoms are mostly neck and up. He does get headaches with pressure, a

distending kind of pain, at extra point Yin Tang. There is sometimes a trace of

slipperiness in his pulse, but the pulse rate is in the mid-sixties, reflecting

his high level of physical activity. His tongue is red, and swollen on either

side of a deep central crack with many small cracks. Over time, his tongue has

become less red and the small amount of fur has turned from yellow to white. No

problems sleeping, digestion ok, an occasional case of sciatica, no other

symptoms.

I believe that I need to change to a formula that focuses more on the head

symptoms and stopping the cough. Any woods of wisdom from out there?

What is his history like as far as infections, surgeries (tonsilectomy,

adnectomy), etc. I am thinking of maybe an immune issue as Kiiko puts it.

The neck is the gateway from head to body and very reflective of such

problems. Hope this helps. Later

Focus on the lung channel LU 1, LU 7 and others. Add some LI points, LU 11.
