Here is an interesting article I have found: On the Origin of Time, Matter

and Life

http://www.ontheorigin.com/modules/xfsection/index.php?articleid=6

OK, that is not an easy read. The theory presented is the life-work of a

Belgian scientist, Fons Wils.

Why is it mentioned before this discussion group?

Well, it may contain some revolutionary ideas (presented and proved on his

website) that explain the origin of Life. It is of particular interest for

people in our field, since there are clear analogies with Taoism.

My limited understanding: the author postulates the existence of a

Non-Universe, parallel to the Universe as we know it. This Non-Universe does

not depend on Matter or Time. Scientists have long been searching for an

explanation to the organisation of Matter and Energy in the Universe. This

theory says that Non-Matter, existent in the Non-Universe, contains this

information. This Nothingness, however, is dense with energy. This abstract

energy " carries " the dynamic structural information of Matter. Since it

exists out of Time, it is an ideal feedback mechanism for evolution. A

feedforward mechanism is also possible.

Universe and Non-Universe need each other: Non-Universe needs the Universe

to realise its potential; the Universe needs the Non-Universe for its

evolution and function.

The information particles in the Non-Universe correspond with receptive

structures in the Universe. These receptive structures grew more and more

complex over the time, but initially were only two concrete points (later

organised into atoms, molecules, DNA, organisms etc).

Because of this growing complexity, a better communication between

Non-Universe and Universe was possible. This resulted in the creation of a

consciousness; since the information in the Non-Universe exists beyond Time,

and the Universe grows more complex, this means a better future-orientedness

(hence a consciousness).

This gives a theoretical basis for the hypothesis that the purpose of

evolution is to produce life of a higher consciousness. Or: the Universe is

a teaching and learning machine.

We can see an analogy here; the Dao (or Heaven) as the Non-Universe; Earth

as Universe (with the receptive structures).

Man is between Heaven and Earth. Traditionally, the Shen were regarded as

plural; and they come and go. But when Jing is deficient, the Shen lose

their roots, and visit less ('low in spirits').

Analogy: Shen can be regarded as the information-carriers from Nothingness.

Jing can be seen as the receptive structure. They need each other to

function well, and for the individual to realise his/her potential.

This short presentation contains ideas by Bruno Braeckman, one of my

acupuncture teachers, and the theory by Fons Wils. The theory itself is

dense, but it is a very long and very difficult read, although he tried to

avoid abstract mathematics. When this theory gets more accepted (it should);

it could mean a small revolution.

Some people try to avoid metaphysics in life, or in medicine. While this may

be true to a certain degree in order to stay practical, I do believe that we

cannot avoid the subject completely. Because it seems like logical, medical,

and physical fields all arrive back at metaphysics when one delves deeper. I

don't think " Ling Shu " was a name chosen by coincidence. It certainly also

points into a metaphysical direction.

It won't help to get insurance companies cover acupuncture, but maybe it can

answer some of the " why " questions.

Regards,

Tom Verhaeghe.
