Newsflash: Doctors Are Human Too

Extended Shifts for Residents Called Risky for Patients

After 10 hours on the job, a truck driver must pull off the road. After 16 hours, an airline pilot can no longer legally fly a plane. But after 24 hours or more on the job, with perhaps an hour nap somewhere along the line, a first-year medical resident can perform a surgical procedure, write a prescription, or insert a chest tube.

Which only goes to prove that goods and a truck and aircraft are more valuable than human life?

I agree that this is not safe nor a good practice for

physicians. I also feel, that the occassional

all-nighter might be good, as there can be situations

when a doctor may not be able to leave a patient for

that long or longer. Believe me, I have been there.

As for the airline pilot, the 16 hours only includes

duty time. That is the time they check in until the

time they place chocks after the final leg of the day.

This time does not include any travel time to and

from the airport, meal times, and getting ready for

work. Depending on where they live or spend the night

on duty, it could take and hour or more each way just

to the curb of the airport, then, due to security

checks and size of airport, it could take up to an

hour to just get to the aircraft to check in. That is

the time frame many crew members plan, depending on

location. Also, the 16 hours is only supposed to be

used on the final day of the trip, or in an emergency,

although a 14 hour duty day is very common. Believe

me, there are many, many fatigued pilots out there

flying 100's and of innocent passengers every day!
