Guest guest
I have never done any running, only slow weight training and I had a resting pulse at 44. Running is a bad exercise, because it puts a heavy load on your knee, and it is incomplete. Weight cannot get you there........any one thinking twice about that, can understand that - that is wrong. There is nothing there, is pumping your pulse better than a deep kneebend, with whatever weight you can have on your neck, at 15 reps......that is considered light weight training, a circulation exercise.Den 26/03/2008 kl. 14.26 skrev thehavens:WHAT KENN IS TALKING ABOUT IS CALLED "THE HEART TRAINING RATE" WHERE YOU ELEVATE YOUR HEART RATE THRU ANY FORM OF AEROBIC EXERCISE YOU ARE COMFORTABLE WITH, THEN ONCE YOU REACH YOUR IDEA RATE,[ MINE AT 62 YEARS IS LOWER THAN SOMEONE HALF MY AGE] COVET BAILEY WROTE A GREAT BOOK ABOUT 30 YEARS AGO CALLED "FIT OR FAT" WHERE HE EXPLAINS IN DETAIL HOW WE NEED TO HOLD THE IDEAL TRAINING RATE FOR YOU, FOR AT LEAST 12 MINUTES ONCE WE GET UP TO OUR IDEAL RATE BEFORE THE BENEFITS START KICKING IN............THE SPECIFIC TYPE OF EXERCISE IS NOT AS IMPORTANT AS FINDING WHAT WORKS FOR YOU......SORRY KENN, CAN'T GET THERE WITH WEIGHT TRAINING, AS GOOD AS THAT IS FOR MUSCLE DEVELOPMENT AND TONING THE BODY.....THE EXERCISE MUST BE SUSTAINED FOR A MINIMUM OF 12 MINUTES AT YOUR IDEAL HEART TRAINING RATE....YOU CAN GO LONGER OF COURSE, BUT NOT BE UNDER AND GET THE BENEFIT..........JOGGING FOR EXAMPLE, IF I RUN WITH A MAN MY AGE, HE AND I CAN WORK AT THE SAME PACE AND BE FINE, BUT IF I RAN WITH MY LADY, SHE HAS TO BE AT LEAST SIX YEARS YOUNGER FOR US TO RUN AT THE SAME PACE AND NOT HAVE ONE OF US HOLDING BACK, OR HAVING TO WORK HARDER JUST TO KEEP PACE........THERE ARE SIMPLE CHARTS IN "FIT OR FAT " THAT DETAIL THE AGE/TRAINING RATE DIFFERENCES.........THIS IS A GREAT WAY TO IMPROVE THE BODY'S METABOLISM AND ALL THE OTHER KNOWN BENEFITS OF EXERCISE! I just know you're teasing me.....I was actually thinking about people who have either been very sedentary or ill. A lot of times, the same applies to people who have gotten really fat, because morbidly obese people often don't move around much. Sometimes it applies to people who have had a fairly rapid weight gain, even if they're not morbidly obese. Often, they've been very sedentary. Actullay, it just occurred to me - I've been seeing a lot of kids lately, who are unbelievably physically unfit because all they do, is sit and play video games. And, at an age where most kids would be very fit. Once upon a time, I was very strong and an athlete. Don't want to brag, but I was lucky to be good at most things. When I was a kid, I won the Illinios State Junior Tennis Chamionship. (then we moved back to Europe - so that was it for my tennis career - except for being on a team at school) When I got older, I did a lot of sports and used to run long distance - not marathons, but not on a track either. Couple miles, I'm guessing. Up and down hills - that sort of thing. Anyway, I was strong....As an adult as well. I pretty much could do anything I set my mind to. As I said - I was lucky. Had good genes. But, I did work hard at things. Most of my brothers and sisters were the same, but not all were as competitive as I was. That is, until I developed 1st, degenerative disk disease (which resulted in 3 back surgeries), then MS. In fact, this time last year, I was in a wheel chair. When I finally began walking again, I could barely walk 3 ft., and needed to have someone next to me in case I fell. Actually, I wasn't sure if I would walk again....But now, I can walk several blocks - maybe even 1/2 to 3/4 of a mile if someone is with me, and can go big shopping (for food) without using a chair (that's usually a several hour ordeal over here. Especially if you only do it once a month). After being so ill last year, and having been bedridden for quite a while, it was difficult for me to lay on my stomach and lift my arms arms vertically - kind of like the wings on an airplane. I was shocked - that my muscles were in such bad shape and the weight of my own arms would almost be too much for me to lift. Anyway, initially I could barely lift various parts of my body, let alone add some weight. However, the longer I work at it, the stronger I'm getting, and have gotten to the point where I use small weights with my arms. But can't as yet, do it for a sustained period of time. Hopefully my strength and endurance with continue to grow - but it's not a given with MS. Sometimes, with MS and certain other diseases, no matter how hard you try, you're not going to get beyond a certain point. Muscles and nerves don't work properly, no matter how hard or how long you try. I know weight bearing exercises are especially good for women, who's bones often get weak as they get older. Not sure how it works, but weight bearing exercise apparently makes the bones stronger....so, I plan to keep walking and moving up in weight until I can go no further....... You have not lost your guts, and that is a good beginning.KennDen 26/03/2008 kl. 18.11 skrev Lynn Ward:At 11:09 AM 3/26/2008, you wrote:Oy vey...noooo. And, at an age where most kids would be very fit.Once upon a time, I was very strong and an athlete. Muscles and nerves don't work properly, no matter how hard or how long you try.I know weight bearing exercises are especially good for women, who's bones often get weak as they get older. Not sure how it works, but weight bearing exercise apparently makes the bones stronger....so, I plan to keep walking and moving up in weight until I can go no further.......LynnYes, you had a weight of 500 pound in your mind......but the weight comes in smaller size.Den 26/03/2008 kl. 10.02 skrev Lynn Ward:At 08:53 PM 3/25/2008, you wrote:Oh, I agree that lifting weights is wonderful. Even for older folks. I guess you're right - no matter what shape you're in, you can work up to that 60-70%. Even when it takes a lot less weight and a lot less time if one is in bad shape. There are a lot of health benefits that go along with lifting weights, even smaller ones. For some reason, I guess I was thinking about heavier weights............silly meLynnSure it does, the idea is that you work your pulse up to 60 - 70 % of your max. If take a walk is enough then you do that. But I just want to stress out that lifting weight is the best overall training you can do. And it is great to raise the pulse.Den 26/03/2008 kl. 01.12 skrev Lynn Ward:At 06:02 PM 3/25/2008, you wrote:Kenn,It depends on what kind of shape one is physically. Some people can not do what you have suggested. They have to work up to it. If one is in bad shape physically - for whatever reason - they gradually need to work up these times. Weight training is great - as is walking. If one can't do a lot, then start with a little bit, for a short time. When you can do whatever it is you're doing with ease, then go to the next step. Add a bit more weight, and a bit more time. Just like walking. I've known people who initially could only walk a couple of steps on their own. Walking you can do every day. Every 3rd day, add some to your "workout." Before you know it, you'll be walking blocks, then miles.....OK, maybe just blocks. *smile*LynnDo weight training 3 times a week, you got to have your pulse at around 60 - 70 % of your max for 12 - 15 minutes. The idea is that it speeds up your metabolism, in other words you use more calories.KennDen 25/03/2008 kl. 01.07 skrev kelleeobannon:hi, i am new to this site and am in desperate nee to lose about 100 pounds. whatever i do i cannot seem to lose.
