Turns out that tuff acesulfame-K isn't so swell either. Most of the info

I found on it was pretty old, but apparently people have had concerns

about it since the 1980's. At least. During the 80's and 90's several

groups were trying to get it banned...

Coca-Cola has reformulated the Mexican version of Coca-Cola

Zero by removing artificial sweetener sodium cyclamate, revealed media

reports

The artificial sweetener has been replaced with a combination of two

other artificial sweeteners, aspartame and acesulfame-K. New bottles and

cans of Coca-Cola Zero carry the words 'without cyclamate' in Spanish.

Sodium cyclamate has been banned in the US after certain lab findings

suggested that the sweetener posed a cancer risk. Consumer advocates in

Mexico strongly protested against the presence of this sweetener in the

Mexican version of Coca-Cola Zero.

Beverage World quoted Rafael Fernandez, director of communications for

Coca-Cola Mexico, as saying: " The formula changed because we have

developed something that more approaches the original taste of Coca-Cola

Classic. There was a campaign [against sodium cyclamate]; this is true,

but cyclamate isn't a problem. It's a perfectly safe ingredient. "
