Hi I am Donna and new to this group. I have a long list of

medical issues that is making me think that I should maybe look

out of the box for solutions. All of them are kind of tied

together and can be classified as Syndrome X. I am currently

taking 11 pills a day. I take 4 for my blood pressure, 1 for

cholesterol, three for my stomach (I have a fatty liver aka

NASH), 1 for diabetic symptoms, an asprin and a multi vitiamine.

I have high blood pressure, high cholesterol, a fatty liver

(nash), IBS, GERD, Insulin Resistance, plantar facities, carple

tunnel, a nurapathy, asthma, osteoarthritis, I think that's it.

Oh well I may have forgotten something in there. It's hard for

me to keep up. I also have a husband that is diabetic an 18 year

old son that is also NASH and is partially deaf, and 24 year old

son with Ankylosing Spondylitis, bi-lateral sacrilities without

fusion and scoliosis. So I guess I forgot that I am totally

stressed out on top of all this which compounds my medical

problems. I would really like to get off the medications and get

rid of the toxins that I know are floating through my blood

stream. I plan to start making changes as soon as possible

including I am currently loosing weight. I am down over 25 lbs

but still have alot to loose. I also have alot of allergies so I

really have to be carefull with some things as I can't have soy

or sulfa. Any suggestions of what might be helpfull would be

really appreciated as I don't know much about how to get off the

prescriptions and if things keep up they will add more. I hope

this post is okay. Please let me know if it is not.

Thank you

Donna

Hi Donna,

I am fairly new to this group as well but I have a similar history to yours.

Diabetes, high blood pressure, fibro, OA, carpal tunnel, bone spurs,

bursitis, TMJ, vertigo, celiac disease, IBS, allergies-too many to mention,

asthma, obese, etc. Never had my cholosteral checked--refused.

I changed my eating habits--obviously cut out gluten. I have my diabetes

and blood pressure under control with the loss of only 25 pounds. I have at

least 80 more to go!

I use foods to help me such as cinnamon and stevia for my diabetes.

Exercise especially proper breathing to help with many of the others. I am

doding Tai Chi belly breathing. Inhaling and expanding my abdomen. It

really helps me relax! I am doing the warmup exercises for the Tai Chi.

Not quite strong enough to do the actual Tai Chi yet but looking forward to

it.

My husband made me a set of bike pedals that I can use while laying on the

bed. The regular exercise bike killed my back after just 5 minutes. Now I

can pedal for an hour and it doesn't bother my back at all. I can't walk on

a treadmill due to a broken bone in one foot and reoccuring bursitis in the

other. Special shoes allow me to walk but due to a huge gangelion for a

limited time only.

In the summer I use a Jacuzzi to do water exercises in.

I did start out by taking an aspirin a day to help with the pain and thin my

blood to help lower the blood pressure but found that after 9 months I

didn't need to take it any more. The way I was eating and the loss of

weight made the difference.

I researched a number of diets and found that one called THE FAT FLUSH PLAN

met most of what I needed. I liked it because it cut out the grains to

start with, suggests the use of spices, no artifical sweeteners, and doesn't

eliminate fruit. It is a more balanced diet than many others.

I use the glycemic index to help pick what foods I eat to help keep my

diabetes under control. If you change your eating habits test your blood

sugar often if you are taking medication. It can get too low. I didn't

have this problem as I went against my doctors orders and had stopped all

meds years ago. In my case I was finally eating right with no gluten to

solve my celiac problem and wasn't about to have stomach pain because of the

meds I was on. So I stopped but this is not always the best route to take.

If your symptoms are severe enough, change your eating habits first and

watch your blood pressure and sugar levels. You may be able to gradually

lower your dosages and wean yourself off of them as you take control of your

life and body.

I add spices to my foods: specifically cayenne [have been building the

amount up], dry mustard, ginger, and turmeric. I use it in my breakfast of

poached vegetables and one egg. I use a frozen stir fry mix. I add a half

a medium onion and than just before I dish it up I add 2 cloves of chopped

garlic. During the summer I also add swiss chard.

I use flax seed oil and flax seeds on my raw vegetable salad for lunch.

Romaine lettuce as the base.

I eat a cut up medium apple with the skin and shaken with ground flax seeds

and cinnamon. Makes a great snack.

I also eat 1/2 a red grapefruit a day. Peel but leave most of the white

attached and than eat like an orange. If you are still on medications be

careful with the grapefruit as it does cause a problem with some medicines.

For dinner it is poached chicken and dill pickles and about an hour before

bed I have a carb snack such as plain air popped popcorn. I have a problem

with my blood sugar being high in the morning and this helps keep it down.

I figure it is all working for me as I didn't end up bedridden this

winter--the first time in 8 years! And I haven't had to take my pain pills

in months.

I still have problems and it will take me years to get them all under

control but I figure I didn't get this way overnight and I am taking one

step at a time to get myself better.

Right now I am at a plateau and having difficulty lossing weight but I am

hoping once it warms up outside that I will be getting around more---as I am

planning a big garden so I can grow lots of organic vegetables. I am also

planning on greeting the morning sun to start some sun therapy and working

on doing some detoxing on my body systems.

I haven't had an asthma attack in over a year and for the first winter in

years I didn't get major sick. I would get a runny nose for a day but by

the next I was fine---so I figure my body is starting to look after itself.

No major allergy attacks either.

I hope this helps some.

I am also interested in hearing what anyone else has to suggest for you.

Jackie

Actaully the food part is not the problem. We follow a very strict GI

diet and eat lots of fresh fruits and vegetables. I do exercise each

day and have been using Flaxseed Oil and ground flax seed. I have

gotten off the OA meds with exercise but the part that scares me is

the liver issue. I know I have to loose the weight slowly because if

I don't it will come back but this is worrying me. I eat cinnamon

with no problem but can't eat spicy foods as I have issues with my

stomach. I do love apples and always grab a couple (one of each type)

when I go to the store. We peel them because organic is not available

and I don't want the toxins that are on the skin even though we wash

them well. I do eat Grapefruite but only on occasion. Not a big fan.

Got rid of sugar and use splenda now. Tried Xilotol (sp) and Stevia

but didn't really care for it. (I do have two non diabetic kids at

home as well). We eat fish a couple times a week. Limit our red

meats. Eat no Pork at all. Lots of turkey and chicken as well. Salt

is a thing of the past. I even make my own salad dressing so I know

there is nothing in it to be bad for me.

I am starting my own garden this year (I usually just grew tomatoes

but this year I am branching out so to speak). I have heard that

CoQ10 (I think thats right) is good for Cholesterol and that Milk

thistle is suppose to be good also.

We only use olive oil for sauteeing but mainly food is baked. We do

eat alot of middle eastern food but they have been modified where

needed.

Junk food is now a 4 letter word in my house. We avoid it like the

plague. I do have a bit of a sweet tooth but I get diabetic

chocolates or candy when that comes up (down to maybe one time a

month). Soda is anothering that is gone from our home. Tea is drank

only if it hot. No hot chocolate. No coffee. No milk. No honey

(except for medicinal purposes (with lemon for soar throat)). About

the only thing I haven't given up is long grained rice (it is not

like most american rices) I get it from Sam's Club and it is from

India (called Basmati Rice). It is not a glutonouse and there is a

special washing that it goes through to clean the startches out of

it. It is then partially boiled rinsed again and then steamed. Very

light.

I usually eat a salad every day for lunch (romane lettuce with maybe

a tomato and lemon, flaxseed oil and garlic for a dressing). If I

exercise to fast I get thrown into Asthma so while I do walk 2-4

miles a day I take it at a slower pace until my lungs get built back

up (smoked for way to long)

Cholesterol is anothering we have cut as much as possible out of our

diet without becoming dangerously low on it. (lets face it meat has

cholesterol in it and we do have 2 - 3 oz servings of meat a day). I

eat alot of veggies both cooked and raw. My fruit could probably be

bosted a little more but I do get one to two servings a day. I also

eat a yogurt every day for dairy.

Eggs are limited to Egg Beaters daily and real whole eggs once a week.

I am working on relaxing techniques to lower my stress levels but

it's a bit hard when you worry about so many different health issues.

Thanks for responding.

Donna,

It sounds like you have a good start.

I couldn't stand grapefruit when I started but going with the red which is

good for me and just eating one or two sections a day, I worked up to a

whole grapefruit but that is too much for my diabetes so cut back to the

half.

To be honest, most of the food I eat now I wouldn't touch with a ten foot

pole just a few years ago. I started out with a little and gradually

changed my diet.

I was looking for foods, herbs, spices I could eat that would help my health

rather than supplements. With the gluten intolerance, I didn't want to take

a chance with it being in a supplement so this method works best for me.

I use only stevia. I use the white stevia with fiber added in my drinks,

plain stevia in baking, and liquid stevia in my cranberry juice.

I use olive oil as a spread. I put a small glass jelly jar of olive

oil in the fridge and after about a week it thickens up and spreads nicely

on my flax seed toast. If I forget to put it back in the fridge immediately

it goes right back to the oil.

You sound like me in that you are impatient for things to be better faster.

I finally accepted that doing it naturally was going to take longer but at

least I didn't have all the side effects with doing it the doctor's way but

than I didn't have any problem that was immediately life threatening.

My hope is that I as I feel better my body will clear out the cholesterol [i

have a deposit over my left eye but it is a lot smaller than it was two

years ago so my diet is working] and start to heal itself. My allergies are

better as well as my immune system so I figure my body is working right. As

I continue to heal, the leaky gut should go away. At least that is my hope!

Meanwhile, I am researching other methods of cleaning the toxins out of my

body as we gradually eliminate the toxins from the house. We just got rid

of all plastics in the kitchen. We eliminated teflon last year. I am

buying organic where ever possible and I garden organically. Just got my

first pomegranate!

I have no experience with regard to your liver situation.

I understand the Basmati rice is low glycemic which is great. I have a bag

of it but haven't been eating much rice yet so haven't tried it.

We do the turkey thing too. I roast one once a month and vacuum seal the

leftovers after cooking the carcess for broth. Love the vacuum sealer. I

use canning jars instead of plastic bags. We stopped eating the boughten

ground turkey because there was just too much stuff added in.

Would you care to pass along your salad dressing recipe?
