Guest guest
I just found Sunflower oil in the supermarket. Is this a better oil to cook with that olive oil as far as acrylimides are concerned? I don't cook on very high temps but why use virgin olive oil if another oil takes the heat a bit better! I like the taste of sunflower oil better on my eggs! I'd use coconut oil for cooking but its very expensive here. Sincerely Barb M>
Guest guest
I like to cook with sunflower oil as it has far less residual taste than either Olive or Coconut oils - I sure don't like my eggs tasting of coconut! I use it in my apple cakes too. Best, Jane - B Magnatta Friday, March 07, 2008 6:04 AM Sunflower oil I just found Sunflower oil in the supermarket. Guest guest
If you want to use butter use ghee instead as there are no milk solids to burn in ghee ........ - Kenn Johnsen Friday, March 07, 2008 9:43 AM Re: Sunflower oil What is wrong with butter......... Guest guest
I buy my coconut oil from Tropical Traditions. You can google their website. Their prices are very reasonable, especially if you can catch a sale. , " B Magnatta " <mom.magnatta wrote: > > I just found Sunflower oil in the supermarket. Guest guest
I have never seen my NZ butter burn, or any other for that matter. My Mac Dictionary says......ghee, clarified butter made from the milk of a buffalo or cow, used in Indian cooking. And clarified melt butter in order to separate out the impurities.......aha...Den 06/03/2008 kl. 23.49 skrev Jane MacRoss:If you want to use butter use ghee instead as there are no milk solids to burn in ghee ........-Kenn Johnsen Friday, March 07, 2008 9:43 AMRe: Sunflower oilWhat is wrong with butter.........Den 06/03/2008 kl. 23.11 skrev Jane MacRoss:I like to cook with sunflower oil as it has far less residual taste than either Olive or Coconut oils - I sure don't like my eggs tasting of coconut! Guest guest
I bought a heap of ghee when it was "on special " last year - it is meant to last indefinitely - superior to butter for frying - i think we even get Danish butter down here in Oz too - but I don't often use butter for frying - well I don't fry stuff much at all - just cook things gently - and usually use Olive Oil for most frying - or simmering really - usually only mushrooms or eggs - goodness I sound like I'm rambling!! Guest guest
Rambling, no not at all. I have not heard about ghee before, and never seen it here. I have began using NZ butter, for two reason.....the cows are grass feed out on the field year around, and they are not pressed so hard. A NZ cow yield 7,500 pound a year......our cows yield 23,000 pound a year. They say it is OK. but I know when I was a boy....in that time the cows yielded 8.....9,000 pound, and the udder mastitis were a problem....so I do not know about now. But I do think it is common knowledge that if you pressing a higher yield out of something.....whether it is grain or animals, the food value does not follow.Den 07/03/2008 kl. 00.26 skrev Jane MacRoss:I bought a heap of ghee when it was "on special " last year - it is meant to last indefinitely - superior to butter for frying - i think we even get Danish butter down here in Oz too - but I don't often use butter for frying - well I don't fry stuff much at all - just cook things gently - and usually use Olive Oil for most frying - or simmering really - usually only mushrooms or eggs - goodness I sound like I'm rambling!! Guest guest
Thats interesting Kenn - I agree NZ would appear to be the better choice - i always thought Danish would be the best - possibly because it is more expensive and wrapped in gold or silver paper - looks classy! Interesting how we are still misled by appearances! The ghee i bought was in a cheap grocer about 50 cents for 500g but a good brand. I tried it in cooking a cake and it didn't work very well at all - but for pan cooking it is great - they say among the best oil to use and the Indians use it as medication - you would find ayurveda very interesting especially searching ghee in the message archives, Best, Jane - Kenn Johnsen Friday, March 07, 2008 11:06 AM Re: Sunflower oil Rambling, no not at all. Guest guest
I don't eat the stuff. I don't know why, I just don't. I would prefer nothing if I had to eat butter.
