We need both forms of iodine -- elemental and iodide forms. The thyroid absorbs mainly the iodide form, and some other tissues and organs (such as breast and prostate) absorb mainly the elemental form. (Two drops of this concentration of Lugols is equal to one tablet of Iodoral.)If you're taking 12 drops per day, you're getting 75 mg of total iodine, consisting of 30 mg of elemental iodine and 45 mg of potassium iodide. (It's the same dose as if you were taking 6 tablets of Iodoral.)Whether or not that's "safe or good" depends on your personal needs --your own deficiency level, level of bromine toxicity, level of heavy metal toxicity, etc.If you're not having new or unusual symptoms with that dose, it's probably fine. If you are, you could cut back to a lower dose. I think most people use a lower dose for long-term use, but it depends entirely on your own needs and body chemistry. Since you mention, "We have been hungry and restless feeling different," that could indicate the dose is higher than you can tolerate at this time. Even at a lower dose, you could have unusual symptoms, since taking iodine can cause detoxification and a corresponding detoxification reaction. Some of us use a "pulsing" dose, where we take a given dose for a day, or a few days, then take a break from it for a day or a few days. If you haven't read Dr. Brownstein's book about iodine, it would be helpful for you to read it. See http://www.drbrownstein.com/singleproduct.asp?id=787.
