The Hague: Patients who are using the antibiotics Avelox, are

running the risk of serious (fatal) side effects.

In a letter to thousands of Dutch doctors and pharmacists, Bayer is

publishing safety measures this week.

The IGZ (the organisation for Health care,)has confirmed an article

about this in the newspaper Het Algemeen Dagblad of Thursday.

Fatal risks

Bayer notified the medical establishment after discussion with

European and Dutch pharmaceutical authorities and the IGZ.

The fatal risks were identified after a safety analysis which

according to Bayer is done on a yearly basis.

In other countries, a connection was made between the death of 13

patients and their use of Avelox.

The majority had fatal liver damage ascribed to the use of

Avelox. Other patients developed blister like skin problems which

also ended in death.

In the letter, Bayer urges the Dutch doctors to be alert for symptoms

which indicate severe side effects.

The drug Avelox has been on the market in Holland since 2000 and is

prescribed to tens of thousands of patients every year.

End of article.
