Guest guest
Hi, I live in Mexico City and for the last few years sometimes notice a " funny " taste (awful)in the normal rice that you cook yourself, not the instant kind. The taste can't be " soaked " out before cooking it. I was wondering if anybody else has noticed this where you are and if anybody knows why. Could the rice be contaminated with something or genetically engineered or what could it be? I know that Mexico imports lots of rice from Asia. Thank you, Diana
Guest guest
Rice is soaked in water and boiled to remove bran and then made rice. the soaked water may be slightly foul smelling. Another thing is it is sun dried suppose if there is rain in that particular day, they canot dry it . in such conditions more moisture may develop odour. Before cooking rice, wash and pour water and then cook. suppose if there is more pesticides then it could be dedected by lab tests only. you can not guss.handling storing so many stages in transport etc maycause smelling. Asia the worlds higest population is living on rice, and you can't blame them . okey. Guest guest
It wasn't my intention to malign the rice from Asia at all. What I was saying is that for some reason the rice we're getting now in Mexico is very foul smelling and I was just asking the reason why this could be. Rice as I remember it before never had this disgusting almost "dead", formaldahyde smell that it has now. It doesn't matter what brand I buy. It is a problem for me in that my Mexican husband loves "Spanish" rice, and also I'm worried in that if it could be somehow bad for our health.Diana Be a better friend, newshound, and know-it-all with Mobile. Guest guest
Can you find organic or bio-dynamic rice where you are? Jane - Diana Taylor Wednesday, January 09, 2008 7:42 AM Re: Toxic rice? Guest guest
You've given me a good idea. I buy bird seed in bulk that's presented in large barrels at an old fasioned store downtown. I think they also offer rice that is also sold by bulk, not packaged. The problem with the packaged rice from a normal store is that you can't really tell if it smells bad until you open the package.
