Guest guest
Hello everyone, My name is Diana and I'm wondering if anyone on this group has information about or with Peripheral Arterial Disease or PAD. I'm writing for my father, who is 81, and has fairly good health for his age except for suffering terribly with pain in his feet and legs. He's in California and I'm in Mexico City but I was just up to the US for a periodic check on my family. My mother is in a convalescent hospital and I go to see how things with them are about every 5 or 6 months. My father was diagnosed with Peripheral Neuropathy about 2 years ago after he had recovered from shingles. On a recent trip up to see them, he commented that his pain is getting worse and I can see that he's becoming more and more incapacitated. But what really is worrying me, aside from the increasing numbness in his feet and loss of hair on the lower half of his legs is that the bottom right leg and foot are beginning to turn color; it's darker than the left leg. I'm concerned he could lose his leg. The only help he gets from his doctor are medications for pain and being curtly told to learn to live with it. The doctor doesn't seem to care and is lax in other aspects, like my Dad going in for a physical and not even getting weighed. I wish he would quit him, but he's is reluctant to switch to another doctor for what I assume to be the fear of change in the elderly. Looking for help for him on the internet, I came across Peripheral Arterial Syndrome whose symptoms are similar and can occur in conjuntion with those of Peripheral Neuropathy and I have some questions for this group which are: 1. Does anybody know how PAD is diagnosed differentially from PN? My Dad was never tested for PAD or anything else. It was just assumed he had PN. 2. What role does diet and exercise play in PAD? 3. What specialist should he see for PAD and PN? I just joined the PAD , only 6 members with me, and sent more or less the same message and am waiting to hear from them. I would greatly appreciate any and all information and input from this much larger group because I want to help him as much as I can. Thank you all very much, Diana

Guest guest
Alpha Lipoic Acid is supposed to help diabetic neuropathy at about 600 mg a day. Nattokinase and oral EDTA would probably help his circulation. At his age, he probably also should be on sublingual B12, methylcobolamine, 5 mg a day to be on the safe side. Pernicious anemia might be a possibility and is serious. jp Hello everyone, My name is Diana and I'm wondering if anyone on this group has information about or with Peripheral Arterial Disease or PAD. Guest guest
I would advise the Miracle II bath soak protocol - it really helps the circulation - I am doing it and it works well - + drink 2L water a day even if he has to build up gradually to that amount, and gingko should help with that one + Hypericum taken homoeopathically Jane - " Diana de Guerrero " <alamedanina Sunday, December 16, 2007 11:37 PM Help for my Dad Hello everyone, My name is Diana and I'm wondering if anyone on this group has information about or with Peripheral Arterial Disease or PAD. Guest guest
Diana, A few questions to consider about your father. Has he ever been diagnosed with congestive heart failure (CHF)? Was he ever a smoker? And if so how many years? Is your father "at home" or in a nursing facility? I'm not sure what a convalescent hospital is. If he is in a facility he may not have a choice of Dr. He may have to accept whoever is servicing the facility. There may be more than one. How much exercise does your father receive daily? Has he ever been evaluated by a Physical therapist? - kbetai Monday, December 17, 2007 6:12 PM RE: Help for my Dad I am a patient of Peripheral-Vascular-Dis-Ease [PVD] which is equally painful Health-Condition. Guest guest
Hi everyone,This is to answer a feew questions and clarify the situation a little more with my Dad. He still lives at home. My Mother has dementia and has been in a care facility for about 5 years now. Dad had been taking care of her for years, but when he could no longer handle the situation with her, and after she had a mild heart attack, I helped him find a place only about 10 minutes from where he lives so that he can visit whenever he wants to. At the care facility they help feed her, change diapers etc. and there's a resident doctor, so she's constantly monitered. I think this situation triggered the problems he is now facing because he became depressed and suddenly stopped being as active as he once was, and he stopped watching his diet. On a trip to visit them a few years ago, I discovered that his diet had become about half sugar,....breakfast a danish pastry, lunch a small sandwich with a huge piece of cake with whipped cream for dessert, supper, more sugary stuff. After a diet like this he was bound to get sick from something and he got shingles. His doctor diagnosed the subsequent problems he was having in his feet as peripheral neuropathy. He is now a boerderline diabetic too. As I stated, I live in Mexico City, far from them in California, and whenever I come up to visit about every 5 or 6 months, always try to get him "back on track" so to speak....healthy diet, good health habits, exercise, walking etc. There's a good seniors program in the city where he lives with lots of activities, but he has kind of shut down since my Mother went into the rest home. My main worry now is that he hasn't been diagnosed properly and could have PAD. My Dad is still more or less self sufficient. He still drives (only in his town, which is small) and does his shopping, laundry and isn't really ready to go to a place where they take care of him just yet. If my Mother passes, then I'm going to try to convince him to come down and live with me and my family here to be able to care for him myself. Thank you all for your ideas and input, all of which I have relayed to my Dad. It really helps to know that someone is there with good ideas and readly to help. Guest guest
About 2 years ago he began complaining that he had some numbness in his feet. Then he got shingles and the numbness got worse. He says that it's very painful and that the sensation in his feet is as if they're on fire. What worries me is that his right lower leg is different in color than the left. Dad never gets sun on his legs but it looks "browner" than the other. I've emailed him to INSIST that he ask his doctor if he was ever tested for PAD when he got the diagnosis for peripheral neuropathy. As far as herbal teas go, as I live in Mexico, there's a age old culture here of using natural remedies for all types of ailments and you've given me a good idea for visiting Dr. Abel Cruz, an expert on natural healing here.
