(Address: Carlotta Galeone, ScD., PhD., Istituto di Ricerche Farmacologiche "Mario Negri," Via Eritrea 62, Milano 20157, Italy. E-mail: galeone ).Summary:In a multicenter case-control study involving 1,369 patients with benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) and 1,451 controls, results indicate an inverse association between onion and garlic intake and risk of BPH. Diet information was gathered using a validated food frequency questionnaire. After adjusting for potential confounders, the highest intakes of garlic and onion were associated with 28% and 59% reduced risks of BPH, respectively, compared with no intake of garlic and onions. Additionally, combined frequent intake of garlic and onions was associated with a 35% reduced risk of BPH, compared with no intake of garlic and onions. Thus, the authors of this study conclude, "This uniquely large data set from European populations showed an inverse association between allium vegetable consumption and BPH."Jerome Mittelman, DDS, FAPMjmittelmanFor free sample of The Holistic Dental Digest PLUS, reply with your street or pob address.
