There are some things you can do nutritionally to support your thyroid and you can also take the natural versus the synthetic thyroid hormone (Armour thyroid). The natural has more of the components of your natural thyroid hormone and the synthetic (Synthroid) doesn't. I also have underactive thyroid. I've gone through it all and was actually was off my thyroid replacement hormone for a little over a year! But about 2 1/2 months ago, I noticed I was very cold inside with air conditioning and then my hair started to fall out like crazy! Handfuls! Then the increased fatigue. (we won't even talk about my 'system' slowing down to the point that I had only one -umm- 'movement' a week.) I could not get in fast enough (literally! Every place I called didn't have an opening for a month! I was seeing Dr Mercola, but with a new job and too much driving in my life -I figured I needed to see someone new.) I called back after 2 weeks and complained --after all these are supposed " natural " docs and they were willing to make me go through that for a month more!!?? I at least got in a week earlier. My main point is that it is possible to get off of thyroid hormone and have your blood levels return to normal (as long as you didn't have your thyroid cut out). It takes some work and very good nutrition. Next is this: find a more 'natural' doc and get on the Armour thyroid hormone. There are a lot of lies spouted about Armour thyroid and the ones who do most of the spouting are the 'regular doctors'. Literally, 2 days on the Armour thyroid and I felt amazingly better! Another point: I am realizing how lucky I was to find Dr Mercola. Even though he has one strange practice (some kind of 'tapping' therapy that I don't to), he is nothing compared to what I found this time around. The doctor I saw came into the room and pretty much immediately said " I bet you have long second toes. " I'm sitting there dumbfounded. I finally make a face and say yes. She goes on to tell me that those w/long 2nd toes are " leaders, intellegent, and this and that, and they get totally frustrated with others who are too focused or narrow-minded... I must have made a face because she felt she had to back it up with " It's true, the government spent billions on studying it....... " She then went on to tell me that people w/ long 2nd toes have " this, this, this and this wrong with them nutritionally/physically... " and then camemy diagnosis and then my 'exam'. My diagnosis by this doc was based on the fact that I have long 2nd toes??? Now, she doesn't take insurance, so I had to pay for this appt up front. My appointment soon ballooned to over $1000 dollars, with her adding 'this' on and 'that' on and 'this' to my blood draw...... I called her up to the front and said " look, I'm trying you out and I don't like what I've gotten so far. Take everything off of the blood draw testing except the thyroid panel and scrap everything else. I came because of my thyroid and I KNOW I'm underactive --and I won't be coming back. Oh, and by the way --I am not my body, so a long 2nd toe doesn't dictate who I am. " Do some good research and find someone you like --and don't swallow everything a doc has to say --find out for yourself. The " regular " docs and the " natural " docs can both come up with some strange stuff. In my opinion, you can't just go taking just any nutritional(s) and hope it helps. Get the correct dosage of thyroid hormone. Get some energy back and then attack getting good nutrition and herbal supplements. Actually talk to Doc Shillington about it or another natural doc you trust and find what works for you. Then get regular blood draws/whatever to see if your thyroid hormone dosages need to be lowered/increased/stopped(?) Good luck to you!
