Why would you kill them? they pollinate your garden. I love having

bees in my garden. Bees are a part of nature and have a right to live too.

Have to agree with Tom.

I use to be afraid of bees, wasps, and hornets.

Then one day while sitting at the creek, reading a book.

A hornet came along, and buzzed about me.

Knowing better than to swat, I started a very low, non-threating

buzz, myself.

The hornet kinda hovered, and then flew away.

I thought, 'Cool!'

So now, when anywhere that such subjects show up, I buzz back at

them, if they get to close for my comfort.

They usually hover a moment and then leave.

Try it, it's worked for me many times... :)

Well, for the most part, I would agree with you, but there are some

varieties, like carpenter bees, that can be a big nuisance. Also if

you have a colony or swarm claiming a location you can't avoid like

right over your back door... That would be a good enough reason for

me to get rid of them, particularly if you are very allergic to bee

stings.

What problems are you having with the bees exactly (swarm, nest, just

a few random foragers?), and what kind are they? I might be able to

offer some advice if you provide more details.

Under most circumstances, I would say not to kill any bees. They are

very beneficial when it comes to growing anything

(foods/herbs/flowers) due to their pollination efforts. Most times,

they will not hurt you, unless you mess with them or their hives.

That being said, there are some occasions where a swarm will become

very aggressive, and will strike at almost anything that moves. When

this type of swarm moves in where it can create serious problems

(such as in/on a house, near a doorway, or hole in the ground/yard

etc.) there are a few options. Personally, I would not try to

remove/kill a hive yourself, without protective gear.

You may be able to locate a beekeeper in your area that will come and

remove/kill/relocate the bees for you. (depending on the bee type)

Another option, is to locate a pest management company that does not

use poisons to kill the hive. You should be able to find these

options in the yellow pages of your phone book. Just be sure to ask

what methods they use to remove/kill the hive.

Around here, the bees that tend to become angry/aggressive are yellow

jackets and/or bald-faced hornets. Honey bees and Bumble bees are

usually very docile, and rarely cause problems. I normally

appreciate all the various bees/wasps/hornets we have around here,

and they don't bother anyone. But, last year, we had a huge hive of

yellow jackets that was attached near the top of the house, right

above the herb garden and our back door. This swarm became very

aggressive for some reason, and nobody could go near the herb garden

to water it or harvest it, and the bees would attack the screen to

the bathroom window anytime you went in there. They would also swarm

into the house if you opened the back door, and start attacking the

light fixtures (or anything that moved). They would go after our

dogs too. Due to weather conditions, the bees could not keep up with

the hive building, and by evening, the bees would all have to stay on

the outside of the hive, covering the whole thing. (I am not sure if

that is why they became so aggressive) I felt really bad about

deciding to have them killed, but they became worse & worse over

time, and I feared for our safety, and that of our dogs and cat.

Anyways, after calling many different places that all used poisons to

kill the hives, I did finally find a place that used natural

ingredients. They used a combination of mint oil and enzymes. He

advised that some swarms of yellow jackets can become very aggressive

and its not a trait that should be passed on to the next generation.

(apparently, the attacking/aggression can be " learned/inherited " from

previous generations too) He estimated there were at least 800 bees

in that hive, with another 300 or so eggs waiting to be hatched.

We didn't even notice the hive (even tho it was huge), until the bees

started swarming and attacking. This year, we will be watching, and

will try to discourage any hive building on the house, before it gets

to that size.

I heavily vote for the beekeeper. Most beekeepers, during

springtime, spend a lot of time capturing and hiving swarms. There's

no reason to poison them, since they can be easily and successfully

re-established. They're only doing what they do naturally and bees

are not typically harmful. It is not difficult to find a

knowledgeable beekeepers- if you have difficulty call the county

extension office- yes, even in a metropolitan area.

with regards to the helpfullness of bees.....

my aunt has really bad arthritis in her knees. i saw something on discovery channel that i put to the test. they were using be stings to counteract the joint pain. so i told her about it and she was actually using that as a therapy. when her pain flared she would get a bee in a jar and let it sting her knee, that pain went away.

but that was then this is now, i am looking into herbal ways to remedy her pain.

any ideas?

Oh I have a friend with MS and she uses bee sting therapy to keep her mobile and she was in a hospital really bad off. She came home and she and her ex (she lives with him) decided to get bees for her, and she does it often and now she works and walks and lives.

Bee stings are really good and after awhile the pain isn't bad.

Flo, who also hates getting stung, or bit or ???anything that hurts!

Hi Kelli,

lol, i dont really remeber how it goes. it has something to do with the venom in the stinger, it counteracts the pain faster and longer than the pills she was taking for the pain. Kelli Bever <kelli wrote:

I love bees. They help me. I find if I talk to them, If I get the feel that they want to be left alone . I leave them alone. Respect! Leave an offering of cornmeal, to honor them for all they do. They will generally pay back your respect. Love & Light, Karen p.s. My tree fell, my bees are gone, I miss them muchly!Charlene <silk_mistress1946 wrote:

Actually, its more complex than that. Its called Bee Venom Therapy.

Below is an article describing it, how it is done, and what symptoms

may be good for.

I have never used the therapy, but I have read several articles

describing it, and know of a couple of people who tried it, and said

it worked for them.

I did find the subject very interesting, tho. :)

<snips> (for entire article, see link above)

Apitherapy, the medicinal use of honey bee products, has been

practiced since ancient times. In the modern world honey bee venom

has found wide uses in treating arthritis and other inflammatory and

degenerative diseases.....

Bee Venom therapy can be useful in a wide variety of medical

situations. Charles Mraz, a beekeeper in Middlebury, Vermont who has

popularized bee venom therapy for the past 60 years, says that it is

reasonable to try bee venom therapy in any clinical situation where

nothing else works. However, there are four situations which are most

frequent:

Arthritis and other systemic inflammations...

Acute and chronic injuries. Bursitis, tendonitis and other areas of

injury respond well to bee venom therapy....

Scar tissue....

Multiple Sclerosis....

There are physicians around who use bee venom therapy in their

practices. This is done by obtaining the venom (in sterilized vials)

and injecting it under the skin, sometimes mixed with a local

anesthetic. Some say that collecting the venom in vials loses some of

its potency, but in many situations this is more realistic than

finding a beekeeper or handling bees....

Fortunately, most " bee " sting allergic reactions are actually to

yellow jackets or wasps. Honey bee venom does not necessarily cross-

react, and some studies show honey bee stings to account for less

than 5% of all adverse stinging insect reactions....
