When vitamins have a () behind the listed component, it tells you

the " form " of the supplement. It can sometimes tell you whether its

synthetic or not, but it still doesn't always tell you what

the " source " of the vitamin is.......

Most of the vitamins sold nowadays, are synthetics, some made out of

coal-tar derivatives, or they may use various chemical solvents

during the process etc. Even some of the supplements that

use " natural " ingredients, may be chemically processed

and/or " isolated " by the lab, so you don't get the whole benefit of a

real food. (they are usually mega-dose types)

For example, if you take 2000 mgs of plain ascorbic acid, (which is

part of vitamin C) it would be the equivalent of eating a room-sized

orange. But, without the bioflavanoids that are contained in an

orange, you still are not getting the benefits of a single whole

orange. In nature, vitamin C is ALWAYS accompanied by the

bioflavanoids, which help for better absorption so the body can

utilize the vitamin C. So a C " complex " made from food, with

bioflavanoids, is recognized by the body as food components, and is

better absorbed and used.

Same thing with the B vitamins. The B's all work together and

compliment each other, so taking a natural B " food complex " is better

utilized by the body, than taking a single B component. (I hope I

have explaned that understandably) The B vitamins are usually

synthetics derived from coal tar too, (just like E's), including

those used to " enrich " or " fortify " non-organic breads, flours,

cereals, rice etc.

Many of the studies showing the dangers of " vitamins " , were done on

the SYNTHETIC versions of them....like Vitamin A toxiciy, and/or the

Vitamin E & D synthetics etc. If the body does not recognize these

synthetic versions, it doesn't know what to do with them, and that is

where the damage/toxicity comes in.

Many of the vitamins today, also use lots of chemical additives in

them (which would be listed under " other ingredients " on the label)

Whole Food vitamin supplements, on the other hand, use the entire

FOOD to get their vitamin " complexes " . These type supplements will

list the FOODS they are derived from on the labels

under " ingredients " , and they will also advise they are Whole Foods

on the front of the label. They are not mega-doses, as real foods do

not come in mega-doses. They are more expensive than

chemical/synthetic vitamins because they are made from FOOD.

(synthetics are cheap to obtain, hence their cheaper price). There

are several manufacturers of Whole Food supplements, and most of the

health stores around here carry at least 2 or 3 brands. If you have

an alternative medicine doctor (including Chiropractors) they can

usually order them for you, if you can't find any locally.

Many of the synthetic vitamin mfrs claim that their

chemical/isolated/synthetic/coal tars with chemical " additives " work

the same as those that are made from food. I simply do not believe

them, as our bodies were designed to utilize food, not consume

synthetically derived chemicals. I do believe that old saying... " Let

your FOOD be your medicine " .... That is just my humble opinion

tho! :)

Hope this helps....
