Neither of us want to take the malaria tablet because of the adverse side effects it is known to have. A friend of ours suggested taking brewer's yeast a fortnight before we travel and to continue taking it while we were on our holiday. Any other suggestions? Thanks in advance. Guest guest
You could also look into what to eat so the mosquitos doesnt want to " eat " on you. They shy away from people who eat certain things. I cant remember what it was. Maybe garlic was one of the things.... Also, avoid sugar (maybe even starch-rich food, I am not sure about that) as much as possible. Mosquitoes like blood that is from people who eat sugar. My physicist teacher told us that. He was one the mosquitoes ambushed, when he was in the forest or on the mountain, lol... Anyway...what I try to say is, the less mosquito bites, the less the risk is to get Malaria. And there is several aroma essences to use to repell the mosquitoes. One of my friends always use cinnamon bark aroma essence. They dont like it. Guest guest
Myra, I give my dog a mixture of the following every day to keep the bugs away: Brewer's Yeast powder...........................8 parts........8 Tablespoons Green powder (like barley green)...........3 parts.........3 T Fiber (like psyllium powder)....................3 parts.........3 T Garlic powder (I just empty capsules)......1 part...........1 T Vit C powder, buffered............................1 part..........1 T Clove powder (anti worm)........................pinch........1/2 teaspoon Stevia powder (tastes better to them)........Pinch..........1/8 teaspoon This would probably keep bugs away from people too but I don't think it tastes too good so you would want to put it in capsules. I give my dog a level teaspoon a day. Another option is to take a natural bug repellant and spray it on a few times a day. I have Aubrey Organics Gone spray and Ark Naturals Neem Protect Spray (this is for my dog but it is safe for human use). You can also get neem oil shampoos and conditioners for your hair so you have some extra protection. Good luck! >>Message: 3 Tue, 31 May 2005 01:58:32 -0700 (PDT) Myra <mc_escher80 Malaria prevention? Hi all, My boyfriend and I live in England and we are planning a trip to India in August. Any other suggestions? > > Myra ******* One of the best mosquito/biting fly remedies I've found is Lemon Catmint. I grow my own, and if the bugs are biting, I just break off some of the plant, rub it in my palms, and then rub the scent on exposed areas of my skin. (It smells SO good!!! even more " lemon-y " than true lemons) I have read that regular catnip works well too (but the lemon camint smells better, IMHO). Research has found that catnip is up to 10 times more effective than DEET. (see article below). Since you probably won't have access to either of the plants there, maybe you could make your own infusion to take with you, so you could spray it on? Or get some catnip oil from the HFS to make up your own spray? Additionally.... Our household switched to natural skin/hair care products several years ago. Since that time, we have noticed that whenever we are with anyone who uses the chemical products (soap/deodorant/shampoo etc), we don't have to worry. The bugs all go after them instead of us. So, you could always use natural skin/hair products and bring along a chem-user, as a " bug trap " . heh- heh... FWIW Jan / Michigan http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2001/08/010828075659.htm Catnip Repels Mosquitoes More Effectively Than DEET <snips) (for entire article, see above link) Researchers report that nepetalactone, the essential oil in catnip that gives the plant its characteristic odor, is about ten times more effective at repelling mosquitoes than DEET — the compound used in most commercial insect repellents.... While they used so-called yellow fever mosquitoes (Aedes aegypti) — one of several species of mosquitoes found in the United States — Peterson says catnip should work against all types of mosquitoes.... Why catnip repels mosquitoes is still a mystery, says Peterson. " It might simply be acting as an irritant or they don't like the smell. But nobody really knows why insect repellents work. " .... Catnip is a perennial herb belonging to the mint family and grows wild in most parts of the United States, although it also is cultivated for commercial use..... A patent application for the use of catnip compounds as insect repellents was submitted last year by the Iowa State University Research Foundation. Guest guest
Hello, I just joined this group, and was reading your message. Do you know where I could get some Lemon Catnip? We have four horses and 3 dogs (just to name two species...) and we need some fly/mosquito/tick spray ideas! I have read about catnip being 10x stronger than DEET. I would like to use it, and I was going to use YLEO oils, but decided against it after I saw how much the catnip oil is! (I'm on a very limited budget:( Anyways, I would like to make a spray, and I think we have catnip somewhere in the garden of weeds...lol How would you go about making a strong spray, and which is better, Lemon Catnip, or plain Catnip? (that lemon sounds really really good...I have never heard of lemon catnip before) Anyways, thanks so much for any input or advice! herbal remedies , " zoomom9 " <zoomom9> wrote: > herbal remedies , Myra <mc_escher80> wrote: > > > > My boyfriend and I live in England and we are planning > > a trip to India in August. Guest guest
Just want to say that two of my sons travel from USA to India every few years for business. They did take the malaria tabs because they were travelling in some areas and season where mosquitos are heavy. I gave them a small bottle of LemonGrass essential oil and had them put a drop in the palm of their wet hands every morning when they got dressed and pat it on their clothing and hair (not on skin). Also had them set out cotton balls with several drops on in their rooms/office etc. Also LG is a delightful fragrance to wipe down counter tops (just a couple drops on cloth. Also had them take probiotics with them tot take with each meal to offset bad bacteria altho of course they knew not to drink water/raw foods etc. Frankly I think its wise to take the Malaria tabs but if you look into it further you might find out percentage of likelihood of getting it and make a wise decision. Garlic and Vitamin B (brewers yeast has the B's) should help but no guarantees that it would My sons have seen no ill effects from the pills, you could do a cleanse when you get back to offset any harm hette herbal remedies , Myra <mc_escher80> wrote: > Hi all, > > My boyfriend and I live in England and we are planning > a trip to India in August.
