Sties

Overview:

An eye sty is simply an infection or inflammation of one of the oil or

sebaceous glands that lies along the edge of the eyelid. Eye sties appear as

painful red lumps and then develop heads of whitish pus. They are not

contagious and cannot be passed from person to person.

Children tend to develop sties more often than adults, probably because

children's glandular secretions are more erratic, especially during puberty,

and children tend to be less careful about keeping their hands clean and

away from their eyes.

Symptoms:

Appearance of red lumps which then develop heads of whitish pus.

Causes:

Usually caused by some unnoticed chronic infection.

Conventional Treatment:

Sties are usually treated with plain hot compresses, although you could also

use a boric acid solution. When treatment is begun early - right after a sty

is first noticed - it will usually clear up in a couple of days.

Many doctors prescribe antibiotic drops or ointment to control the

infection. Sties rarely require excision, and under no circumstances should

a sty be squeezed. The eyelid is the thinnest skin on the body and is easily

damaged.

-----

I'd have him take total tonic and Echinacea. Check his diet for reheated

junk foods such as chili, burritos or Sloppy Joes or some such. Have him

wash his face off more often through the day with a warm damp face towel

until sty is gone.

Tracy,

If what your son has in indeed a sty, my daughter gets them every so often, and I have her take 25,000 IU of Vit A (emulsified to bypass the liver) for a few days, and it disappears. She also gets the small rough bumps on the back of her upper arms which I have found out is due to a Vit A deficiency. Those have diminished also since Vit A intake.

Hi Janet:

How does emulsification bypass the liver?

Do you know which is better emulsification or micellization?

Thank you in advance for your help.

Victoria,

I am not an expert on all the technicalities of Vit. A. My local health store owner is the one who gave me the info on the emulsified form (and she goes to a lot of seminars). Looking on the internet, I found that the emulsified is easier to digest, so my thoughts are that the liver does not have as much work to do. I was not aware of micellization. But now reading about micellization, that form looks to be even easier to digest.

Follows is part of an article I found on the comparison. The whole article is at: http://www.invet.com/micellization-page.htm

EMUSOL® MICELLIZATION

Recognizing the advantages of aqueous preparation of fat-soluble nutrients over oil forms, research during the past few years has concentrated on improving the design of new dosage forms that substantially increase the effectiveness of such formulations. Much of this activity has focused on the development of micro emulsion systems in which an oil is divided into very small droplets referred to as "micelles".

The use of micellular technology not only improves the efficacy of the product but allows a reduction in the total dose. One of the newest breakthroughs in nutritional delivery systems is the unique patented EMUSOL® Micellization Plus process. The uniqueness of this process is easily demonstrated by observing the resulting transparent solution when a micellized nutrient is added to water. However, the real advantage is the increase in amount and rate of absorption.

ENHANCED BIOAVAILABILITY

Human subjects were given 50,000 IU vitamin A palmitate in either an oil, emulsified or EMUSOL® form. The blood plasma levels were measured as an increase over baseline levels (2.675 micromoles/liter) at 4 and 8 hours. Figure 1 below graphically illustrates results while Table 1 provides a summery on the relative increases.
