Guest guest
I asked this question a while back, but I never saw it get posted. Guess the computer ate my homework! Has anyone heard or had any experience with Dong Quai causing heart problems? I have a friend going through menopause and when I suggested Dong Quai, she said that she had taken a combination herbal mixture that had Dong Quai in it and she had problems with tachycardia and angina. She has a preexisting heart condition. She said that her Osteopath, (supposedly well versed in herbs), told her not to take Dong Quai as it could cause this problem. I have never heard or read anything about this. I asked her what other herbs were in the mix and she mentioned licorice as one. I told her that was the herb more likely to cause her heart troubles. She could not remember the other herbs or who she got it from so I have no way of tracing what other items might be the culprit. If anyone has any knowledge regarding this, please let me know! Doc? Zeb? Any insights here? Thanks! Elaine
Guest guest
The American Herbal Products Association's " Botanical Safety Handbook " lists Dong Quai as a 2b herb; meaning don't use it if pregnant. They do mention that Chinese sources don't mention this precaution but its the law to mention it in Canada. When they use herbs it tends to be based not on physical symptoms expressed but but an interpretation of various factors and then used as a balanced grouping of herbs specifically for that person. The Chinese rarely use simples. As the person's adventure progresses, the mixture of herbs of products are adjusted to what is needed. Nothing is arbitrary. Guest guest
Penel, Thank you for your reply. I was trying to be brief in my initial post so I guess I did give the impression that I was just suggesting Dong Quai as a panacea for my friends menopause symptoms! That was not the case, but in the course of our entire conversation that day regarding hormones and stress and diet and excersize and herbs and so on, that was when the topic of Dong Quai came up. I appreciate your warning regarding using Dong Quai during pregnancy, but that was not the issue here! :-) I still would like to know if anyone has heard or experienced any heart related issues when using Dong Quai as part of a holistic treatment for female hormone issues. Thanks! Guest guest
Never heard of it causing heart problems and I probably would have it was true. Funny that you mention this. Truth in the herbal forum travels far faster then a " rumor " . No I haven't heard it and worked with that specific herbs for a while now. Guest guest
I do not feel this was clear and was in a hurry. So let me be clear on this. I have never heard of Dong Quai having ANY bad effects. I have heard MANY great things about it. I have worked with it for quite a while and never has anyone reported it as ever having a bad effect on them. I have talked to quite a few women who were happy about this herb. I hope that was far clearer. Sincerely, Zeb Never heard of it causing heart problems and I probably would have it was true.
