Guest guest
Hi Guys, I have a question concerning dandelion. I know when harvesting roots, this must be done in the fall. I was wondering if folks find the leaves to be of much use? I have many herbal books and only one uses dandelion leaves, the others use just the root. Is one better for something than the other, or do they kinda each have their own purposes for different illnesses? I'm trying to figure out if I need to go ahead and gather some leaves now as my yard is full of them. Also, i'm wanting to use dandelion to help with my high blood pressure. The other question I have, as long as a herb is safe to use, is there a time limit on how long we should use it? What I mean is, say we're taking herbs for our liver, high blood pressure, or some other ailment, is there a max amount of time we should use these herbs and then quit? It is better to take them for a certain amount of time and then take time off, then repeat the cycle? Thanks guys if anyone can help me. Guest guest
Lisa, I can answer your one question. Dandelion leaves are rich in vitamins and minerals, especially potassium. The leaves are really good in salads, and can be collected anytime of the year. You can use the leaves much like the roots, for treatment of the same illnesses. Guest guest
I am no expert in this - and I do not harvest my own dandelions - except for use in compost - so eventually much of my food is grown in their bio-active contribution, but I have purchased Dried Dandelion for tea at a Pharmacy of the National College of Naturopathic Medicine, in Portland, Oregon. It is a combination of chopped, dry leaf and roots - but mostly leaves. Naturally be sure the harvest area was grown organically, and not used my cats as an elimination area, or humans for activities that might involve toxics. I was told to use the tea daily for a month each Fall and Spring - to prepare my body for what used to be allergic rhinitis seasons for me. Be sure that Dandelion or other tea that you may purchase does NOT contain Licorice as a sweetener. It is NOT regarded as safe for high BP. (I have low BP - so I love it. I can also enjoy Salt!) It is best to try to understand how each herb acts - and what it's purpose and contra-indications are - and this is fascinating reading, IMO. Thank good ness for the Internet! I think in Homeopathy - one takes a remedy at the recommended dose only until improvement is detected, then stop or take the lighter, recommended dose, or another safe follow-up treatment if desired. Many people abuse Echinacea by taking it when no symptoms are present. That's BAD...as it pushes the body into a healing _crisis_ mode...which is not normal if not needed. I think it is best to get info specific for each Herb or remedy. WebMD has a searchable database where you can quickly check for known interactions also. Here's to robust health! pdxJules herbal remedies , Lisa Mehan <dixieessentials> wrote: > > Hi Guys, > > I have a question concerning dandelion.
