What options do people know for keeping Hot Tub/Jacuzzi water clean? Other

than chlorine, of course! I don't want to substitute something as harmful

as chlorine for chlorine

We recently bought a house that came with a hot tub. Since the only

bath-tub in the house is small and uncomfortable (11 " deep or so, straight

back ... it'll be perfect for baby bathing, but I can scarcely stay warm in

it and I'm on 5'2 " ! My husband couldn't even get the water to cover his

chest and the one attempt we made resulted in lots of water on the bathroom

floor), I thought maybe we could do something with the hot tub. If not,

we'll sell it. (Maybe with the money we could improve on our bath tub

situation :) I really enjoy relaxing in the tub!)

We have a home filtration water system. I do not go in swimming pools and

such due to the chlorine, and we are certainly not going to add that back

into hot tub water after paying to filter it out! We have pretty pure

water to fill it with. How can we keep it safe and clean, in a healthy way?

And how much do such options cost?

Hi Tyrie,

I have been wondering the same myself. My husband and I bought a fantastic

jakuzzi last year and we are in it twice a day. If it has only recently been

dosed with chemicals, sometimes I get a little itchy.

We use bromide, and it doesnt give off the gas that chlorine gives. Not sure how

good it is for you though.

We did look into other methods of treating the water, and apparently there are

colloidal systems (for pools too). However, it was not at all practical for us,

there was no one local, and my main problem is that we had no way of knowing if

the water was sufficiently dosed or not, which is too dangerous (and we have

kids who sometimes use it) when we have water sitting between 35 and 38 degrees

celcius, all the time.

However, my attitude is that I am basically healthy and the benefits we get from

the jakuzzi, the relaxation and the marital bonding, outweigh my concern about

the chemicals. A basically healthy human body has an enormous capacity to deal

with things.

I am interested though if there is an alternative, with proven doseage rates

etc.

Last year I gave my husband permission to put a hot tub in our back

yard just as soon as all the major work is done on our house. He

instantly ordered every book at Amazon he could find to help him

figure out the chemistry applied to hot tubs.

One thing he learned is there's not one book he would recommend to

anyone on this subject.

When I asked him just now, his response was that you'll need to watch

the water's chemistry.

In the long run, bromine is more carcinogenic than chlorine.

When you get into the water you will sweat pints of sweat. The

chlorine deals with the chemicals from your sweat.

What to do? Add the chlorine to the water when you get out. Hopefully

it will have dealt with the chemicals from your sweat and mostly

dissipated into the air.

Our list of major home improvements is just about finished. I imagine

my dh will be getting his hot tub sometime this summer. This is all

the research I can honestly give you now.

As for myself, I've been drooling over wish books for an infrared

sauna. Perhaps in the next house.

Look into Ozone and Colloidal Silver. These are becoming more mainstream for keeping pools and Jacuzzis clean.

Hello, i dont have a hot tub but i heard that hydrogen

peroxide 35% food grade can help with your problem,

not sure of the dosage though, but hydrogen peroxide

is an excellent source for anything natural anyway.

Not sure if this helps, thought ill let you know
