State sends reminders of shots

Some 15,075 Louisiana

households with children under age 2 are getting postcard reminders that their

children may not be up-to-date on their shots.

The postcards are a part of the state

health agency's " Shots for Tots " program aimed at Louisiana's poor childhood immunization

rates.

Some 83 percent of U.S. children

under age 2 have all their required shots to guard against childhood diseases

such as mumps and measles.

Louisiana's rate last year was 75.5 percent. For the first quarter of 2005, Louisiana's rate stood

at 72.6 percent, fourth lowest in the nation.

During the week of April 24, parish

health units and participating partner clinics throughout the state will offer

extended hours to make the immunization process more convenient for parents.

The state is sending postcards to the

households whose children have not shown up in records as having received their

immunizations.

The reminder postcards are generated

through the LINKS system, which helps the state Department of Health and

Hospitals identify children who may be due for one or more immunizations.

LINKS stands for Louisiana Immunization

Network for Kids Statewide. It is an automated system used to track all

childhood immunizations.

The system can prompt health officials

when an individual is due for a vaccination. It allows the state to target

families whose children are not up-to-date on their shots and issue automated

reminders.

LINKS is in use in about half of all

doctors' offices and all parish health units that provide immunizations.

Parents bringing their children to a

parish health unit for immunizations are encouraged to bring the reminder

postcard with them.

It will be scanned, and the child's

immunization record will be pulled up in LINKS. This helps to expedite the

immunization process.

More details on participating health

units and partners clinics will be made available the week before the event.
