I would never have thought of Castille soap being used as a toothpaste. The first time you tired it must have been a courageous step (grin) Like you mentioned it takes getting used to but once you're used to it .I'm not sure I could do the Castille soap but then again I might try it just to see what its like.

I hate regular toothpaste, all sugary and flavored with mint and such - when I finsish brushing it tastes like I've had candy rather than cleaned my teeth.I've been using Tom's toothpaste and find it good but I mix the tooth and gum formula in with it and it feels and tastes much better ...

Take care Gloria

Re: Herbal Remedies - Re: Dental Surgery- Att: Andrea

With your dental experience, may I ask you a question about the Sensodyne toothpaste. The dentist on Monday suggested my using it Glenda...I also want to add that I NEVER use any kind of toothpaste. I use Dr. Bronner's Pure Castile Soap. I put a couple drops on the toothbrush and then dip it in goldenseal powder to brush. When I told this to my dentist he said that's fine; he is just a little concerned about how I'm going to get my fluoride!! (Ha! I didn't bother mentioning that fluoride is exactly what I'm avoiding). The soap gets a little getting used to but I was told that it takes over 20 rinsings to get the residue of regular toothpaste (even natural ones) completely off your teeth and soap rinses off with only 3 rinsings. They add glycerin to ALL toothpastes (check the ingredients) and it causes the paste stick to your teeth and it can retard new enamel formation. Dr. Bronner's soap has a small amount of glycerin left in the soap (but none added) and it can be more easily rinsed off.Gloria

Hi Glenda!

No, it really didn't bother me to give it a try. I read a book about teeth and gum problems and they said that all (even natural) toothpaste contains added glycerin (check the ingredients), and that it is the one of the worse things you can use for your teeth if you have gum problems, and to use pure soap only. I've been doing it for so long now and have gotten used to it. It really leaves no bad taste if I rinse well. The golden seal powder that I dip it in is bitter and that DOES leave a taste, but I don't even mind that. The wet soap mixes in with any plaque and softens it and keeps it from hardening on the teeth. I'll do whatever it takes. LOL!

I wonder why most medical folks look at alternatives as 'uneffective'?

I don't think all of them see them as totally ineffective. They just don't see them as a replacement for medical treatment. They have gone through so much schooling and have learned so much, that most of them have had no motivation to look into anything other than what they have learned. There are some that do, especially when it comes to a point where medicine has failed...the incurables. In every profession there are those who just practice what they were taught and those that are a bit more curious and start doing their own research.

Thanks, Glenda. I sometimes take one step forward and 2 backwards, but I am dedicated to this endeavor.

You are so dedicated, Gloria - I wish I had the strength of your dedication. I might try the castile soap and I say that very hesitantly ... I am going to try the Seaman's tooth formula that Zeb suggested with the sea salt and soda and moisten it with the tooth and gum formula.

You are an amazing lady Gloria. You have put so much effort into your dental care , I only wish your dentist could recognize your improvements and use your ides with other patients. I wonder why most medical folks look at alternatives as 'uneffective'?

Take care and enjoy your weekend

I used to dip my toothbrush in a drop of tea tree oil, but it melted the plastic.

Yeah, with repeated use those oils will melt plastics so don't put them in a water-pik. You'll kill it! ;-)That's one reason I use the goldenseal powder on my toothbrush.

Tea Tree melted the plastic !Amazing . I use tea tree in the tooth and gum formula and have had nothing but success - it tastes good so the other ingredients must 'mask' the tea tree taste ... my goodness that stuff tastes foul. I can't imagine having the courage to put it full strength on my toothbrush and then into my mouth ... its good stuff but smells terrible.
