Guest guest
I am hoping someone here can tell me if there is an alternative way to treat gum disease . I have major gum disease and won't get surgery. Put off the surgery, start taking 5,000 mg. of buffered vitamin C powder with bioflavanoids in some juice every single day. (You can divide it into a few doses per day). Take 100 mg. of Coenzyme Q10 every day. Get a water pik and shoot it between every tooth and the gum line using a mixture of water and Listerine. Do this everytime you eat anything. Rinse your mouth with myrrh and goldenseal tinctures and massage your gums with Tooth and Gum formula. Take about 4-6 droppersful of echinacea tincture per day. Get a Sonicare toothbrush and throughly brush about 3 times a day. And stay away from ALL sugar. I mean not a drop of the stuff! My gums have improved from doing these things plus, I even do MORE. It's almost a full time job for me but I have a regimen down to science. I have done tons of research on natural methods for treating my own gum disease. Also, don't expect your dentist to tell you these things will help, but, believe me, they can dramatically improve the condition. I didn't get many details but she said she was going to do incisions in the gums because there was minor gum disease . I wasn't feeling well at the appointment and very tired and when I couldn't get any direct answers to my questions about the surgery I took the appointment and left. I am hoping someone here can tell me if there is an alternative way to treat gum disease . Guest guest
Thankyou so very much! Your list of things to do is very detailed and very helpful. I have been dealing with this thing all of my life and decided to take matters into my own hands. I have probably researched every conceivable alternative. I will add a couple more things. Oil of Oregano....GREAT infection fighter. (Gum disease is caused by bacteria under the gum line). You can take a dropperful in a glass of water (yes... swallow it!) and also squirt a whole dropperful right on your gums and rub it in. This stuff is great! Tea tree oil is also very good to massage into the gums. My dentist knows I do all this but he isn't convinced it will really cure anything, but I have had major infection flareups that I have healed doing all this. Also....this is important!... get yourself a Proxy-Brush. It is a dental tool with a brush on the end and you use it to clean in between every tooth everytime you eat anything. You can even dip it in a little tooth and gum formula first. The Proxy-Brush has helped me tremendously. You can get them at WalMart or K-Mart of any drug store in the dental dept. Draw up a plan and start using these different things everyday and see what happens! And make sure you take that Vit. C powder everyday. I use Natrol Ester C powder with bioflavonoids that I get on iherb.com. Gloria

Guest guest
If someone has deeper periodontal issues, deep scaling will also be beneficial as much of the problem is the abrasion of the tarter on the tooth with the gum tissue. Good tooth brushes and water picking only benefit the area of the tooth that is accessible. I agree as I have had deep scaling done twice (and it's no picnic). A dentist showed me how to shoot the water pik into my gum, above the gum line to rinse out bacteria. Also the oregano oil and various herbs will help internally with the bacteria problem. You cannot let any more debris from food get into that gumline, so I proxy brush or water pik everytime I eat anything. I have found that many people with gum problems also have Candida (diagnosed or undiagnosed), and have more "bad" bacteria than "good" bacteria in their systems and the immune system is compromised. It's a perfect environment for gum disease to thrive. Gloria
Guest guest
Water picking will help with the loose debris between the teeth. Flossing should also be added to the regime to help with removing the ‘sticky stuff’ from the tooth or the tooth root as well. IE: toothpaste or mouthwash etc. Read the ingredient labels, and try one without any " artificial anything " and that is also fluoride- free. (they use so many nasty chems in most of the oral products nowadays) I haven't had any tooth/gum problems since making the switch. I don't even let the dentist polish my teeth anymore, when I go in for a cleaning, as my teeth/gums get so sensitive all over again from their polishing paste. If you use a regular toothbrush, use " soft " bristled over medium or hard, as the med/hard bristles can damage/irritate the gums. Personally, I would also find a new dentist, since they won't answer your questions. Jan

I have worked in dentistry for 20 years and my husband is a dentist. First off, I would never treat a patient the way you have been treated. In fact, my job (after the doctor has explained treatment to them) is to go over treatment needed, the fees, what help their insurance will be and answer any lingering questions they have. This is **all before the treatment is even scheduled**!! I am wanting to suggest that you have your xrays transferred to another dentist (once you find one you like! Ask questions when you call, like --will I know about the treatment and have all questions answered before we start? Ask these questions before getting an appointment with a new dentist). Anyway... I work in a dental office and I don't believe in flouride, but the many years of propoganda on flouride have leached it's way into dental schools as well as the public arena... and there are few dentists who look at anything other than what they were taught in dental school and continuing education. Periodontal disease has many stages. They are normally classified as Type I, Type II, Type III, Type IV or Type V, with 5 being the worst. It is caused by food/plaque building up on the teeth. When this builds up, there are bacteria also. The bacteria produce wastes/toxins that the gum tissue and bone try to " retreat " or move away from. This causes the gums to become loose from around the teeth and " pockets " are formed which catch even more debris and the cycle worsens. The bone actually recedes/resorbs back into the body and as this progresses -there is less and less bone holding the teeth in place. They can, in advanced stages, become so loose that they fall out. So... the solution is to remove that debris under the gumline and flush under the gumline with a solution that " kick-starts " the healing by killing the bacteria. It doesn't end there though because a person's homecare must improve and then they are seen on a 3 or 4 month basis to get continued cleanings. Your homecare can be improved by improving brushing/flossing methods, buying dental " tools " that will help you (like Rotodent electric toothbrush -excellent-, a water-irrigation tool and a rinse that does not contain alcohol. Now the good news.... I have seen up to Type III periodontal disease be handled/managed well enough where the bone loss is halted and the " pockets " tighten up so well that these patients no longer have periodontal disease and they are seen every 6 months for a cleaning and never have a problem again. I have also seen Type IV's and V's handled/managed well enough that the bone loss is halted and the " pockets " tighten up enough that it is not such a viscous cycle and the patient stays stable and is seen every 3 or 4 months for their cleanings. I have also seen people who did not handle their periodontal disease (either by not changing their home care methods or not going into the dentist for their cleanings) where it progressed to needing gum surgery to handle it further. Gum surgery/periodontal surgery is this: the gum tissue is cut and " pulled " back away from the bone. The teeth are cleaned up below the gumline and the bone is " smoothed " by the doctor --this helps to eliminate the pockets somewhat. Then the gum tissue is trimmed to eliminate the pockets further. Then that person is put on a regular cleaning schedule every 3 or 4 months. Things must be monitored closely. This definitely is not a picnic for someone to go through --and then there are the aesthetics... there is a lot of receeding of the gums. The " roots " of the teeth are exposed and even there, there is a greater chance for decay. My husband used a toothpaste and rinse in conjunction with his complete periodontal treatment. The rinse does not contain alcohol and I saw excellent results from it. Patients were also instructed to dip their Rotodent toothbrush in the rinse throughout their brushing and also to add the rinse to the water tank of their Water-Pik (or whatever water irrigation tool they were using). Excellent, excellent results! This dentist or one of his/her employees should have gone into this kind of depth with you --showing you the bone loss on your xrays and also answering any of your questions. Looks like they've jumped right into gum surgery. I don't know why --it may be that you do have that advanced of a case. I would like for you to understand it a little better though and not walk away from a dental office feeling mistrustful. I do hope that this helps you. Guest guest
Here's were "No, flossing or brushing won't help" and "No, there's no other way to cure it" . I once went to a dentist (now deceased) who told me that he has patients who use a combo of Listerine and water in a water-pik, put it on low pressure and shoot the mixture right up between the teeth into their gums. He said he has seen a remarkable improvement in the reduction of gum pockets when they do this. This was my first introduction into the possibilty that there are solutions besides surgery. That's what started me on my quest to find these alternatives. Most dentists don't have a clue about all this and don't bother finding out. My dentist knows some of the stuff I do, and while he doesn't discourage me, I can see that it is also totally foreign to him. Guest guest
I am a dedicated and aggressive flosser - I never miss a day so that should help my dental problem as well. I haven't been able to find a Waterpik or Sonicare toothbrush around here so I'll be checkeing out ebay. Take care Glenda - Jeff herbal remedies Tuesday, April 05, 2005 9:22 AM RE: Herbal Remedies - Dental Surgery help Water picking will help with the loose debris between the teeth. Flossing should also be added to the regime to help with removing the ‘sticky stuff’ from the tooth or the tooth root as well. If someone has deeper periodontal issues, deep scaling will also be beneficial as much of the problem is the abrasion of the tarter on the tooth with the gum tissue. Good tooth brushes and water picking only benefit the area of the tooth that is accessible. You really are fighting the gum disease with a vengence and in ways that are so much better than surgery. I wish dentists would research alternatives the way you have and share their findings with patients . I will definitely cancel the surgery. I felt uncomfortable with the idea but yesterday was a weary day for me and after not getting any answers to my questions I quietly took the appointment and left the office . At home I was honest with myself and admitted the surgery goes against everything I believe . You email is a great help to me . I shall start some of your regimen right away and I've made a list from your email of things I need to purchase to get me started. Thankyou so very much! Your list of things to do is very detailed and very helpful. Sometimes I feel like I'm a 'target' for the medical system. I suppose there are many folks here who feel the same way. Take Care Gloria. I really appreciate all your help ! Glenda - MorningGlory113 herbal remedies Monday, April 04, 2005 11:40 PM Re: Herbal Remedies - Dental Surgery help I am hoping someone here can tell me if there is an alternative way to treat gum disease . Also, don't expect your dentist to tell you these things will help, but, believe me, they can dramatically improve the condition.Gloria Federal Law requires that we warn you of the following: 1. Guest guest
Hi Jan; I use an extra soft toothbrush and I have been using natural toothpaste and mouthwash for quite awhile now - thankgoodness, because if I wasn't I am sure the gum disease would be much more serious. Dentists are very hard to find around here - most aren't taking new patients so I suspect I will have to stay there although I will look around and sooner or later find someone new. Everything she said was so definite -there was no consideration of any alternatives at all. The only thing that would work was her surgery and that was all she would talk about -it was a frustrating conversation for sure. Take care Glenda - zoomom9 herbal remedies Wednesday, April 06, 2005 8:36 AM Herbal Remedies - Re: Dental Surgery help *****************One thing you may consider (if you haven't already), is if you purchase any dental products, try switching to natural chem-free ones.IE: toothpaste or mouthwash etc. Read the ingredient labels, and try one without any "artificial anything" and that is also fluoride-free. (they use so many nasty chems in most of the oral products nowadays)I haven't had any tooth/gum problems since making the switch. I don't even let the dentist polish my teeth anymore, when I go in for a cleaning, as my teeth/gums get so sensitive all over again from their polishing paste. If you use a regular toothbrush, use "soft" bristled over medium or hard, as the med/hard bristles can damage/irritate the gums. Personally, I would also find a new dentist, since they won't answer your questions.Jan
Guest guest
Good for you hon. Being the one in control of your own health is what Doc tries to get across to others as the Ideal Scene. Your well on your way love. Zeb - Glenda herbal remedies Wednesday, April 06, 2005 6:27 PM Re: Herbal Remedies - Dental Surgery help Hi Zeb; Gloria gave me some excellent advice and I am slowly buying the things she mentioned . WaterPiks seem to be extremely hard to find here on the island but I'll keep looking. The tooth and gum formula is great. I've been using it for some time now and thats probably why the Gum Disease is very minor. I was a bit too generous with the last batch of tooth and gum formula that I made so not only does it help my teeth but it wakes me up very efficiently every morning (grin). I use the tooth and gum formula as a mouthwash but I also mix it with a natural toothpaste and use that for brushing - its great stuff! Thanks for you help Glenda - Office Manager herbal remedies Tuesday, April 05, 2005 11:19 AM Re: Herbal Remedies - Dental Surgery help Simple tooth and gum formula will help this out tremendously, as well listen to Doc's CD, its free. The tooth and gum formula is designed to kill any infection and will do so. I do not know what Gloria gave as a regimen but the above is what I've seen work time and time again as well as changing your diet as mentioned in the free CD. I use the gum and tooth formula that is in the file section and I think its great but will it help this particular problem? Any help and advice you can give me would be greatly appreciated - I really don't want unnecessary surgery especially since I have a serious reaction to sedatives ... Guest guest
My dentist said I relied too much on my water-pik. That it couldn't remove plaque. I still thought it removed the cause of plaque. Next week I'm going in for dental implants. I'm in my 70's so my teeth aren't a very good color. Dark. I used to have them bonded, but that all wore off. They're going to put me totally out, yank my teeth, and put screws in my jaw to hold the permanent implants. Does anyone know what side effects I should expect? My mind is made up. I'm worried about how teeth relate to certain body parts like feet relate to reflexology. Starris - MorningGlory113 I once went to a dentist (now deceased) who told me that he has patients who use a combo of Listerine and water in a water-pik, put it on low pressure and shoot the mixture right up between the teeth into their gums. He said he has seen a remarkable improvement in the reduction of gum pockets when they do this.
Guest guest
Just thought I'd add an experience of mine here. I had an absess in a tooth, and a huge lump on the roof of my mouth. It was really painful, and came up over the course of the afternoon. I decided to use propolis on it, until I could phone the dentist the next day. I gargled with it, and kept in near the tooth as much as I could, re-applying it every few minuites. I didn't get much sleep that night. By the morning, I could tell it had gone down quite a bit, so I carried on with my treatment. Anyway, it did the trick, it settled down, and after a few days was back to normal. At my next check-up I mentioned the situation to the dentist (I have a different one now!), who wanted to do a root canal filling on the tooth, as he said it might flare-up again in the future! Well, I declined thankfully, as I still have that tooth, and it has not caused me any further problem!
Guest guest
They'll tell you you could die from an abscess. That the abscess will always come back and be life threatening. Mine never came back, but now they insist on root canals where they used to be. Nope. Sorry. Not in MY mouth! That's why I'm getting the implants. \ Starris - bty472460 Just thought I'd add an experience of mine here. I had an absess in atooth, and a huge lump on the roof of my mouth. Guest guest
Odd isn't it how dentists are supposed to be so concerned about dental health and some simple but very effective menthods are lost on them ... Take care Glenda - MorningGlory113 herbal remedies Thursday, April 07, 2005 10:08 AM Re: Herbal Remedies - Dental Surgery help Here's were "No, flossing or brushing won't help" and "No, there's no other way to cure it" . He said he has seen a remarkable improvement in the reduction of gum pockets when they do this. This was my first introduction into the possibilty that there are solutions besides surgery. That's what started me on my quest to find these alternatives. Most dentists don't have a clue about all this and don't bother finding out. My dentist knows some of the stuff I do, and while he doesn't discourage me, I can see that it is also totally foreign to him.Gloria Federal Law requires that we warn you of the following: 1.
