Guest guest
HI all, My 19 month old son has been having some problems with his teeth. Apparently, doesn't have much for enamel on some of his teeth which is allowing for decay and pitting to set in. AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH! What can I do? It also seems as though he is actually in pain when I brush his teeth. I feel awful for him and don't want to just wait for his teeth to fall out. I want to see if there is anyway to stop this before it gets any worse. thanks! Kelly
Guest guest
there is a book called Nutrition and Physical Degeneration by Weston Price. This book is very thorough in describing dental degeneration and what you can do to reverse it. (correcting diet and mineral, vitamin supplements). It is a small wonder anyone in America has teeth with what we put in our mouths. LOL Flo - Kelly Meerdink My 19 month old son has been having some problems with his teeth. Guest guest
Yes, I thought maybe something might be interfering with calcium and magnesium absorbtion? I just read that vitamin A which is found in abundance, along with lots of calcium, in carrots, is needed for absorbtion of minerals, and deficiency may result in problems with tooth enamel. Guest guest
Another thought: are you feeding your son fruit juice, or sodas or something, in a bottle or " sippy cup " , or even soy milk? (I just read that soy milk contains sugars).. maybe something the baby is drinking or eating is causing decay in his teeth? A site I looked at said not to allow baby to drink soy milk, except at meal times, because of the sugars in it. Guest guest
Funny you would ask that. NOT GOOD at all. I have colitis and while I was pregnant with him, in nearly ended up spending the last trimester in the hospital on a nutrient IV. I was on Prednisone, and have been on and off since then. I asked the dentist about that specifically and he said there was no way to really know, but somehow I think it may be related. He did also mention that high fevers for an extended period of time could do this as well. When my son was 6 months old he had a rather high fever of unknown origin for over a week. Apparently, that would be about the same time the last of his tooth enamel would have been forming on his baby teeth. As far as calcium and magnesium absorptions, I wonder if acupuncture might help him. I suppose it may, but the trick would be actually getting him to do it!!! Definitely something to investigate. > How was your health while pregnant with him? > Were you on any medication while pregnant with him? Guest guest
All good ideas, but my kids rarely get juice, NEVER get sodas, have never had bottles and the only thing that he has in a sipppy cup is water. He is pretty proficient at drinking from a cup already, so he only has a sippy cup when I am really busy (I know, it's terrible and I really try not to, but my husband travels and sometimes I get overwhelmed). Awhile back, my daughter was drinking the Silk Soy Chocolate milk, but we have since eliminated soy in large amounts after researching it more. My son hasn't had any that I can recall. Basically, all they drink is water and goat's milk. Periodically, they have juice for a " treat " , organic or course!! :-) My son is still nursing quite a bit as well. I know that the research says that breastmilk is good for the teeth, but I supposed I could have toxic milk or something! I meant that as a joke, but I really do wonder if that is possible. ANy thoughts on that one? Kelly > Another thought: are you feeding your son fruit juice, or sodas or something, in a bottle > or " sippy cup " , or even soy milk? IBD is one of those things that can really impact a person's ability to absorb nutrients. When it happens, its really helps if one has a wise support group of consultants making educated suggestions. Its very difficult to think clearly when one isn't getting nutritional support from the food they eat. I didn't say that for you to hear. I'm sure you already know that from experience. I said that for the people on list who don't have IBD. Your son's first teeth were also forming while you were pregnant. Prednisone can drain the body of calcium. You did what you'd been advised to do at the time. It might have saved your life. I had a neighbor once who'd been on medication through a pregnancy. Her son's baby teeth had very little enamel on them. They started to decay almost as soon as they emerged. The poor child started nursery school with a mouth full of gold crowns. Fortunately he had a great grandmother from the " old country " so he wasn't the only one in the family that looked like that. My daughter was the same age as him. At the time she thought he was rich kid because all his teeth were gold. (One of her reasons why at the age of 4 she'd decided she wanted to marry him.) We all wondered if he was going to be disappointed when he lost his teeth with the gold crowns around age 7 and his secondary teeth came in normal. If I were you I'd consult a dentist about your son's teeth. Perhaps they now have a way of protecting the first set of teeth that isn't as drastic as getting them crowned. If money is an issue, see if there is a dental college with a clinic. Your son's adult teeth are being formed right now. Good nutrition is very vital. My mother's baby teeth were fine but it was during the depression and she had a vitamin D deficiency as a small child. Vitamin D is very important for calcium absorption. (Too much vit. D isn't good either.) Her adult teeth were too enamel poor to hold a crown and she ended up getting false ones at an early age. After early childhood my mother was able to get good nutrition and, though it wasn't soon enough to save her adult teeth, she was able to build good bones and still has good bones at the age of 80. Ask your medical doctor to run a full set of blood tests. You need to make sure there aren't any chemical imbalances in your son's blood. If you saw an acupuncturist, she'd probably suggest you do this also. Taking your son to see an acupuncturist about this matter is not a bad idea. See if you can find one who also is also skilled in herbs and nutrition. What ever results you get from those blood tests take with you if you see any other integrative medicine practitioners. It might not be the kind of information they need for an assessment but it wouldn't hurt for them to know what ground you've already covered. Guest guest
Hi there! My daughter had this problem as well as a toddler. I can tell you that I did not have any meds while I was pergnant, I had a routine pregnancy and she was never allowed any drinks that were not water or juicefrom a sippy cup. At the time we discovered the enamel issue, she had already started eating solids and was weaned off her bottle. (Sorry, i did not breastfeed :o/). I took her to my dentist first. He recommended a pediatric dentist. We went through 2 of them. The first one was not very nice to her or me even. They used a pappose (sp?) to hold her still... She cried and screamed and I got yelled at by the dentist for tryin g to comfort her! That was a horrible experience. Then, we went to the second pediatric dentist and he was great! She sat in my lap while he looked at her teeth. He said that sometimes it just happens for some reason. According to him, some children are just born that way. I am sure there is some underlying reason, but even they don't seem to know why. I had her top 4 teeth crowned with silver and they put a porcelin finish over the front. It was quite expensive, but I had really good insurance that covered most of the expense. Her crowns were so beautiful they took her picture for their magazine. We had a few problems with them from wear and she did fall once causing one to fall off and have to be put back on. Even during these procedures she was not pappsoed by the dentist. He treated her and me very respectfully and I was in there until she went to sleep for them to do the work on her teeth. That is one thing I did allow was for them to fix her teeth under anestesia (sp?). Other wise it would have taken them much longer and then they might have had to pappose her to keep her still. She did well with it. (Obviuosly, it is not something to be taken without consideration of the risks.) Overall, I think it was a good thing to be able to put the crowns on. When her teeth came out, her adult teeth came in and they are beautiful teeth with lots of enamel!! LOL! At the time, I did know someone else whose son had the plain silver crowns. He was constantly teased and made fun of by other kids at school. So, that is why I asked for teh porcelin front to be put on. Anyways, if you do go to a dentist for her teeth, please don't let them pappose him! They will tell you it is for his safety, but it doesn't do anything but upset them and you needlessly! Well, I hope this helps in some way! TAke care and good luck! Gina
Guest guest
Soy is not as bad as many of the websites have made it out to be. There is a lot of misinformation on soy on the net. For instance they claim it is a goitergen. This is true, but goitergens are destroyed by fermentation or cooking. Soy products are almost always cooked or fermented. Then they claim it is an antinutrient due to the phytic acid content. What people are not being told is that phytic acid is found in nearly all seeds/grains. Furthermore phytic acid (inositol hexaphosphate, IP6) is sold as an anticancer compound in health food stores. Also if the phytic acid is already saturated with minerals the plant picked up from the soil then how can it rob minerals from the body. They also claim that soy is high in aluminum from washing the beans in aluminum tanks with sulfuric acid. This one is real easy to prove false. First of all the acid would react with the aluminum producing aluminum sulfate (alum) and lots of highly dangerous hydrogen gas!!! Secondly, sulfuric acid is a very hygroscopic acid. It will literally pull hydrogen and oxygen from organic substances leaving behind carbon. My old roommate learned this the hard way when she knocked my sulfuric acid over on the carpet. Another claim is that I heard was that Orientals are so short due to their high intake of soy. Pretty hard to believe considering that I was raised on soy since I was allergic to mother's milk and cow's milk, yet I am 6'2 " . And I do not suffer from any health problems. Breast milk is better than any other drink for infants. Mother's milk is not a singular milk, but rather a series of milks that change to meet the baby's development. The original milk (colostrum) is antibody rich, which helps to support the immune system until the baby can develop its own immune system. Then the fat content increases to develop the brain and the rest of the nervous system. Then the protein content increases for muscle development. And finally mineral content increases to meet skeletal development demands. In addition the mother's milk provides beneficial flora that serve many functions. Breast feeding is especially important for babies taken by cesarean section for this reason. During vaginal birth the baby gets flora from vaginal excretions pushed in to the baby's mouth during birthing. Therefore vaginal birthed babies are primarily colonized with beneficial bacteria. Though babies taken by cesarean section are first exposed to harmful pathogens in the hospital, and these pathogens become the primary initial colonizing bacteria. The good news is that breast feeding can provide beneficial flora that can build up and displace the pathogenic bacteria. Another note along these same lines. As I pointed out the baby utilizes the mother's antibodies initially. In order for these antibodies to be absorbed the gut must be permeable to these proteins. Therefore, the gut of an infant is permeable to proteins for the first several years of life. Why is this important? Because dangerous foreign proteins, such as those found in cow's milk, can also be absorbed leading to immune reactions. Therefore it is best to breastfeed for at least the first two years of life. herbal remedies , " Kelly " <kellymeerdink@e...> wrote: > > > All good ideas, but my kids rarely get juice, NEVER get sodas, have > never had bottles and the only thing that he has in a sipppy cup is > water. A couple of good books on the subject are Ann Wigmore's "The Sprouting Book" and Rita Romano's "Dining in the Raw". These contain the true data on sprouting. Then there's the subject of Acid / Alkaline ratio as I briefly mentioned, but on top of all this, there's the data on GMO / GE foods. Genetically Modified Organisms / Genetically Engineered foods in this day and age are DANGEROUS!!! Just do a google search on this and you'll get more data than you could wish for. Many African and European countries have actually outlawed American imports because of this. 90% of all Soy products on the market today are GMO!!! 90%!!! And of the remaining 10%, much of this has been contaminated by the 90. Again, read my article on "The Bed Time Story / Frankenfoods" in the Files. I wouldn't touch one Soy product on the market today. Not one! Nada! My two cents. ;-) Love, Doc Ian "Doc" Shillington N.D.727-447-5282Doc Federal Law requires that we warn you of the following: 1.
