Guest guest
Hello Zenny, You have to strain the vinegar out of the mash. If you have too little vinegar then you won't get much out in way of liquid but if you put 3 cups of vinegar you should get back 3 cups of total tonic sine all of the herbs were full of water upon creation of the formula. So you put in a strainer and you push a spoon up against it gently so as not to break the strainer handle. Or you can use a very clean shirt and twist it until nothing more comes out, but the shirt soaks up so much that I prefer the strainer method. This is usually a very light tannish color. After a few weeks it should settle to 1/4 - 1/3 menstrum (liquid) compared to 3/4 - 2/3's plant matter.Love,Zeb- "zengirl04" <zengirl04<herbal remedies >Thursday, March 03, 2005 1:47 PMHerbal Remedies - Tincture Question - Total Tonic Recipe>>>> I have not made a tincture before. Guest guest
Zeb, Thanks for the reply. Okay, so I don't have to use the alcohol- the vinegar is enough to create the tincture! That's much easier. I hate to keep asking questions, but ... 1) Is there any difference in how long the tincture lasts since there is no alcohol, and 2) What is considered a dose? I think Kelli said she takes it daily. Karen herbal remedies , " Office Manager " <office@a...> wrote: > Hello Zenny, > > You have to strain the vinegar out of the mash. Guest guest
For total Tonic, there is nothing other than ACV. Alcohol just doesn't work well with these fresh herbs and foods. ACV I have noticed can go bad over time. Takes long but compared to alcohol it's lousy. An alcohol tincture if stored properly will go for years and years and years. Forget about it for 10 years and if made with high quality ingredients it'll be the same as when you first bought it. ACV might just be off and horrible after about 5 years. This is without exposure to air after pressing it. So understand that Apple Cider Vinegar is from a plant and is not as refined as alcohol. So it will go bad. Warmth, direct sunlight, exposure to air and bad quality components all reduce lifespan and strength of a tincture whether ACV or Alcohol but ACV far worse than alcohol. Some formulas are made with olive oil and those are even less long lasting. About 1 year at the most, with great storage conditions. Far less if storage conditions less than perfect. Hope this helps... Zeb - " zengirl04 " <zengirl04 <herbal remedies > Friday, March 04, 2005 10:26 AM Re: Herbal Remedies - Tincture Question - Total Tonic Recipe > > > > Zeb, Thanks for the reply. Guest guest
<snip. > Okay, so I don't have to use the alcohol- the vinegar > is enough to create the tincture! This dependant upon what is in the herb and what you want to get out of the herb. If the herb contains alkaloids and you wish to use those alkaloids, vinegar could be your best menstruum. Some things in herbs are best extracted by water or alcohol. Oil and glycerin can also be used as menstruums. Herbs that are resinous or oily do not extract well in glycerin. Example; if you want the resins in calendula, you use a high percentage of alcohol. If you use oil as a menstruum for calendula you will not avail those resins to your extraction. For what you are going to use the calendula for, that might be a desired effect however. If the qualities of an herb are best accessed in water and one intends to preserve it, alcohol can be added to at least 20% as a preservative when decanting it. <snip> > 1) Is there any difference in how long the tincture lasts since > there is no alcohol, water; about 24 hours vinegar; 1 -3 years if kept in a cool dark place like a refrigerator oil; one year if kept in air proof container in a cool dark place glycerin; 1 - 3 years > 2) What is considered a dose? With herbs in general, every practicioner has their own formula that takes into consideration both the assessment of the client AND the strength of the herbal medicine extracted. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ A very good book on making herbal medicine is " The Herbal Medicine-Maker's Handbook " by James Green. In it he presents lists of what herbs are solvent best in what mensruums and how to do it. Penel
Guest guest
Hi, The regular dosage of TT is 1-2 dropperfuls 3 times a day. You can take more if you need to. love Lisa - zengirl04 herbal remedies Friday, March 04, 2005 9:08 PM Re: Herbal Remedies - Tincture Question - Total Tonic Recipe Thank you Penel. This is good general information as I do plan to make tinctures of some of the herbs growing in my garden. I'll look for the book you suggested. As far as the dose question is concerned, I was asking specifically about the dose of the Total Tonic recipe in the forum files. This is easy enough to make, but I wasn't sure how much to take. (Didn't mean to rhyme.) <g>> > 2) What is considered a dose?
