Guest guest
Sure for anyone who wants it. ) (I do mine a day or two ahead of time so if I get called away from my concentration i go right back to it and know it will still be done in time to do shopping) OK so First Step : Try to go the same day each week. Second Step: DO NOT take your children with. If I can find a way to be without my children for 2hours. Which is impossible usually. I know you can too. Third Step : The night before, or even earlier if you have the time, Print out our lay out all your cook books that you want to get recipes from. Fourth Step: Print out your blank Weekly menu. ( A piece of Scrap paper with 7 columns works fine too. I have put the one that I use below. If it is hard to print out let me know and I will send it as an attachment privately. Fifth Step: Have a notebook next to you - this is what you will use to write your grocery list down. I make cattegories to make my shopping faster and easier. Depending on how you like to, I do mine in the order they are in my store. and underline the names of each section and leave about 9 lines or so for each. ( Fresh Produce, Deli, Meat, Canned and Boxed , Pasta, Seasonings, Frozen, Baby, Dairy, Breads, Personal, Other ) Sixth Step: Now on to your menu start with the dinners first . since this is the main family meal. Pick out 7 recipes or if you cook without recipes (i say your lucky ) But if your like me you need recipes till you get to know them . Write them down under the dinner part of your menu for each day. Now add a vegetable to each days dinner, and any thing else that may go with that meal. Do the same thing for Lunches (Your husbands lunches can even be leftovers ) Breakfast is pretty open so I just make sure I buy 2 boxes of cereal (malt o meal) and such . No reason to buy tons of breakfast junkies ( i call them) you know, the pastries and the donuts and all that. Wipe them from your mind. Keep those types of breakfasts for special ocassions. Seventh Step: Now that your menu is laid out you can move to your shopping list. Go through each day and write down the things needed to buy for each meal. Some things I bet you will already have on hand. If not. thats ok too. Eight Step: Reward yourself with something calm and soothing . tea, a warm bath. for doing all that hard work. You are now all organized and ready to shop on shopping day. SHOPPING DAY Make sure you have eaten before you go. NEVER go grocery shopping on a hungary stomache. Now FOLLOW YOUR LIST. as you put things in the cart, on the side of your shopping list mark them off and on the back write down an apx price. Keep doing this as you add things to your cart add the amt aproximation and whats on the paper, cross out the old number and write the new number. This lets you see how much money your actually putting in your cart. FOLLOW YOUR LIST. NO EXTRAS STAY AWAY FROM THE JUNK FOOD AISLES. We rarely RARELY go down them. Main things to buy Organic wise that wont break your pocket book. Bananas Apples Pears Lettuce Salad veggies Bulk Herbs, (if it says $7.00 per oz. you dont need to get an ounce, (who really uses 1oz in one dish of cooking anyway ) just take the amt you need to cook with) Bread Amish Chicken Already cut pieces of Meats Tofu Local packaged dried fruits Bulk pasta from the bins Some already packaged deli foods are good deals including premade sandwiches. (these are great for those lunch ideas ) ----- Things in the organic store that will prolly break your pocket book. (this is stuff I buy at a regular supermarket) YES I go to 2 different stores Cheeses Milk Yogurts Butter Canned Goods Juices Boxed Goods Frozen Goods Deli foods You can eat healthy buy changing recipes to suite your own family needs. Guest guest
Great job Deanna. The only thing I'd add is that when you find a combination that works well you can repeat that weeks menu every so often reducintg the amount of planning time. One thing I did to cut my budget even more, is to cut some of my own meat - for instance stew meat costs more than a chuck roast and it takes no time at all to cut a chuck roast into chunks. herbal remedies , " Gina " <kelticgirl14> wrote: > > > HI, Deanna! > Wow! Guest guest
Your welcome If I can h elp just one person with something I do everyday. then I feel like I made a difference I wanted to add something too. Meat is expensive no matter where you shop (if your a meat eating family) cutting back on the mt you use and replacing the loss with extra veggies will also reduce your cost. For example: Lets say your making Chicken Alfredo for dinner. One chicken breast trimmed from fat, cooked, and cut into small chunks is enough to add to the alfredo to feed a family of four. Add your broccoli on the side or in the fettucini and offer another bowl of veggies in addition. Your family wont even notice. I notice roasts for the crockpot that they sell in the supermarket I can take home and cut in half and freeze half Therefore getting two meals from one roast meat. Guest guest
Also remember it takes time to learn new things. You will most likely mess up and vear from your list a couple times, dont be hard on yourself. Take it out of the cart and put it back on the shelf. Or if your already home, remember you can do better next time. I have even gotten to the check out and told the cashier to please not to ring something up, I decided I didnt want it. They have no problem putting it back on the shelf ) In fact they have someone who works there just to do that type of stuff. Just cause you picked it up DOESNT mean you have to buy it. It's your money.. not the grocery stores (BIG thing for me to learn) Another word of thought as well. It took me about 5months to get used to the food coop (the health food store) and what I thought was too high of prices. I realized that many things really weren't that bad for certain things. For example. Organic apple cider vinegar compared to regular apple cider vinegar. Watch for bargains. If the Organic apple juice is $9 a gallon usually (eeek I would never pay that) But you see it on sale one week for $5 for a gallon. Get it. You will know that that week you got to feed your family Good old fashioned pioneer apple juice compared to the conventional you have to buy the other weeks. Some organic is better then none. We dont have to be all organic, and we dont have to follow anyones guidlines except for what feels right to you and your family. Hugs Deana Gina wrote: > > > HI, Deanna! > Wow! Guest guest
Thanks, Deanna! I will use your advice wisely! ) I have a funny story about picking things up and putting them back, well, sort of funny... maybe more a fond memory!! My mom and I used to go shopping... we would load up our carts with all kinds of things we wanted... we used to buy it all!! Bad move, of course!! Well, one day we loaded up our carts and had allkinds of great STUFF. We were getting ready to go to the checkout and we started saying to each other.... " I don't htink I want this! " We ended up putting back almost everything we had placed in the cart. AFter that, we would just go to the store, fill up the cart and put it all back..that way we would get the thrill of shopping, the therapy of it, I should say, and not go home with the debt we just created! I love to shop, esepcially when I am depressed, it always makes me feel better! Be blessed, Gina

Guest guest
Here in Australia most big food stores have certain days and times of day where they have things out much cheaper for a short space of time. For instance recently my son and I were food shopping late at night on a Sunday night and almost just before closing they announced that minced or ground beef as you call it there was out for $2 a packet. I rushed over to the meat section and grabbed as many as I could. Not many people bothered but I didn't care if I looked "Needy"..lol. Also in another store in my home town, they have very cheap vegetables in what I call the "throwaway" box at the end of the aisle. It's veggies that are re-packaged because they are getting a bit unfresh. For instance huge packs of ripe bananas. Just ready for eating. Most people buy them a bit greener so they can keep longer. But for 50 cents a bag they are great for making smoothies and muffins and healthy cookies etc. Also the carrots, I chop the ends off and juice them. Often get a whole tray of tomatoes for 50c and many other things. The rich people don't bother to look here. Lemons and other citrus fruits also. They don't go off. Just get a little softer and more juicy. My son is getting wise to this too and often finds bargains. Jen
