Guest guest
Then my professor asked how I manage our ADD by diet. This was my response. Thank you for your interest. I can tell you right off the bat that processed sugar is our downfall. We have not experimented with the gluten-free diet; I do not yet have the expertise to implement such a thing. I often refer to the " Standard American Diet " when talking to people about ADD. Look through your grocery store. How many things are built on convenience? Children in daycare are given packaged foods because their daycare providers will not cook from scratch, they don't have the time. In school sugar proliferates. Processed sugar and foods are used sparingly if at all in my house and we buy very few things that come in a box. Even things as simple as spaghetti have unnecessary sugar. We use fruits and vegetables as a substitute for prepared meals and candy is a very rare treat. This may sound drastic, but the alternative is trying to stop my kid from running into walls and assaulting me. In my own case, eating processed foods cause me to feel very confused and unable to plan and execute any sort of time management. There is also a question of lifestyle. My children are very active and I encourage that. If you think of the children in a mass-schooling environment, they are forced to sit still for the equivalent of a full time job once you include the commute. Kids are not wired to do that and severe boredom compounds the problem severely. I have a friend that received a printout from her school's gifted program ten years ago. The interesting thing is that 10 years ago, the " symptoms " of gifted children match the handouts of the ADD " symptoms " today. Feel free to ask any more questions, sorry about the length. -Shelby -- Version: 7.0.300 / Virus Database: 266.4.0 - Release 2/22/2005
Guest guest
Very true! I'd like to add to that, if I may... What if... ....Kids today are simply as energetic as they ever have been because they haven't yet had their bodies taxed with toxins (food additives, crappy city tap water, environment, cleaning products, etc etc) and they're actually ALIVE and jumping around, while the adults (their parents) have 20-30+ years up on them of stored toxins and they're simply running at a prematurely slower pace and simply can't keep up? In a world where adults rule, society is seen through their eyes and their eyes alone, and everything else, including the activity level of kids, is seen relative to the energy level of adults, with adults being the standard. To average adults, average kids appear hyper. Well, this is all relative, especially if you consider the theory that ADULTS may be the ones who aren't quite normal, not the kids. Kids haven't increased in energy, adults have slowed down...and no one realizes it. Food for thought, anyway. Comments? Whadday'all think? Guest guest
I have to agree with you on that one! Here where I live, they have been talking about doing away with recess in elementary school. I don't know what dumb ADULT came up with that idea. The kids have a hard enough time, with ot without being " hyper " , sitting for such a long period of time, what do they think is going to happen if they remove recess. For some kids, that is the only bright spot in their day! The work that they think will increase will actually go way down. My 14 year old who is just a normal boy gets bored in calls when they sit through what they call his " Block class " , which is 1 1/2 hours long. His teacher actually had the nerve to tell me my son was not paying attention, well, duh! No wonder he gets bored and doesn't pay attention. I wouldn't be able to do it either. Yes, I do think that all the toxins in their little bodies are screaming to be removed! Unfortunately, it has taken a year and a half of meds for me to get on the right track.
