Guest guest
My 81yo husband has terrible outbreaks on one of his legs (down toward the ankle) and on one hand (mostly around the knuckles). Seems to be horribly worsened now that winter is here, we do use a humidifier in the house. I have made him several salves even gave him some infused comfrey oil to rub in but he claims nothing helps so he ends up putting prescription cortisone crap on to stop the intolerable itching. I was thinking that as licorice works like cortisone would that be helpful if I make him a strong tea to apply or how else can I prepare it? Seems like he needs #1 something to stop the itch #2 an emollient (which I made him using comfrey oil/calendala oil/lavender eo and thickened with abit of vegetable e- wax but doesn't seem to be doing the job (he couldn't seem to tolerate the salve I made with beeswax). Thanks for any help, afraid he will get side effects if he uses the prescription crap. hette

Guest guest
Hi, Doc has a wonderful salve called: Herbal First Aid Salve! It should be in the files in our website. I used it on my hands which were very chapped and itchy, and within 2 days there was a remarkable improvement, and after a week totally gone!! love Lisa - hette herbal remedies Saturday, January 29, 2005 3:46 PM Herbal Remedies - terrible itchy skin question (Doc?) Guest guest
Hi Hette, Lisa responded with Doc's recipe for the salve and I have to also recommend that. I would also recommend a tea blend that I created to ease inflammation which is: equal parts of stinging nettle leaves (don't worry, they don't sting once dried!)...these are a natural anti-histimine, red raspberry leaves, a natural blood purifier...german chammomile flowers...these are a natural relaxant and skin tonic, and rose hips...these will provide ample vitamin C, which is crucial in healing. You may add your herbs of choice for flavor, but this is a pretty tasty blend in it's own right! This is my own " inflammation blend " that I concocted to remedy numerous ACUTE inflammatory conditions and it works like a charm. Bring however many cups of water you wish to brew to a boil and then remove from the heat. Then add one heaping teaspoon of the blend per cup of water that had come to a boil, and let steep for ten minutes. You did not mention your husband's history as far as elevated blood pressure or anxiety, so I would caution your use of licorice. Yes, licorice is a wonderful herb with many healing properties, but it must be used with great care. Please consult a trained Naturopath to help you if you have questions on appropriate herbs and dosages! Good luck and Warm regards, Lori herbal remedies , " hette " <hettenna> wrote: > > > My 81yo husband has terrible outbreaks on one of his legs (down > toward the ankle) and on one hand (mostly around the knuckles). Guest guest
Just remember that the skin is the first line of defense regarding detoxing. Usually a rash is something you don't want to suppress because it'll just work it's way deeper into the system and come out somewhere else in a more urgent way. I don't think I'd use anything stronger than cold-pressed aloe to help the itch and just let the rash work its way out.
