Guest guest
For the time being, I've managed to sort out some basics about nutrition. I had become very confused about diet because of the various books preaching different methods of eating and health - everything from Atkin and Protein Power Plan to the Zone and Vegetarian whatever. However, there are two areas that I keep finding conflicting information and I'm not sure what the " best " truth is. This is regarding digestion and the body's ability to derive the most nutrition from what we eat. Also, assuming that everything is organic. So my question is ... Dairy: I've been told to avoid dairy. Then, I read that unpasteurized, raw milk products are easy to digest and are okay to consume. Then, I read that only fermented (partially digested) milk products are okay: yogurt, sour cream, cream cheese, and kefir. What is the truth here? No dairy? Raw dairy? Fermented raw diary? Fermented dairy? Fruit: I've been told to eat fruit alone and not combine it with proteins or starches and to always eat melons alone. Now, I read that fruits should not be combined with each other because it confuses the digestive system and we should wait 1/2 hour before eating a different type of fruit. My source goes to say that it is okay to combine that one type of fruit with sprouted grains or nuts -i.e. smoothie, etc.. What is the truth here? I just know who to trust and all the sources seem reliable. I would be very appreciative if I could get a clear direction and rationale for it. Guest guest
That's the problem with these diet books. They all have a kernel or three of truth in them and that's what hooks us. The rest of the data in 'em is crap and usually false or misleading. Atkins is very destructive if you don't take into consideration going "Organic" with your meats. It is also extremely one sided with protein and is not the right thing for everyone. If you need healing, heavy protein is not the way to go. You want your body to focus on healing not on digestion. Sure, many people will lose weight on that diet, but some won't. It is an extremely rough diet and I NEVER recommend it under any circumstances. Avoiding dairy is good. Small amounts (a little cream in your coffee or with some fruit, a little yogurt with acidophilus) won't hurt, but why get into the habit. The next thing you know, you'll go overboard, and the small amount is "daily" and "lots of it". :-) The problem with all dairy is that it is addictive and hard to not eat a lot of it. Sooooo best is not to go there at all and get off it as soon as you can. Wean off of it over a period of time if you have to. Your "fruit data" is from Dr. Sheldon and "Fit for Life" and is pretty good data, and for the most part sound information. There are exceptions to this and apples fall into this category. You can eat an apple with anything. I don't even know why, but you can. You should stay away from mixing Blueberries with any other fruit as it is the only fruit which is Acid Ash in production. Eat Blueberries by themselves and in small quantities. The rest of Sheldon's data is pretty good. As an added note: Even though I'm not down on "ORGANIC MEATS", I do feel they should be eaten in moderation. And always eat a big salad before eating any meat. This gets the enzymes going. This data is applicable to cooked foods as well. Always eat a raw salad as the beginning of any lunch or dinner. This will stop you from eating so damned much. LOL :-) Most of this information is in my CD lecture though the above on fruit is new. Hope this helps. Guest guest
Thank you for the information. Actually, my question came from distilling information from various sources. Mostly, I was the reading " Essential Eating " cookbook by Janie Quinn. She is a proponent of sprouted grains. However, she says nothing of sprouted/soaked nuts. I was surpised by her saying that you should NEVER mix any fruit. I mix banana and strawberries/cherries all the time as well as other fruits. I still don't know if this is okay. I also didn't expect her to promote yogurt, sour cream, etc. but she does. She especially promote yogurt to use in making cheese. herbal remedies , " Dr. Ian Shillington " <DocShillington@K...> wrote: > That's the problem with these diet books.
