Long saga and a plea for advice

I apologise for the length of this - but as you will read it's being

going on some.

In July I had a smear test that resulted in me being recalled due to

having " borderline changes. " So I made my appointment duly made for 9

January.

As I am on the pill, and have been on the same pill for over ten

years I can work out really easily when I'm due. I'm kind of the

clockwork girl both menstruation and associated mood swing wise.

SO I was due on 31/12/2004. My last period was 03/12/2004.

I came to the end of my pill pack - and so far I am now 21 days late.

So I went for the follow up smear test on 11 January, but ended up

with a pregnancy test instead. Lots of questions from the nurse about

my pill taking and if I've been stressed / ill / gone on a crash diet

in the last few months, as well as the " are you trying for a baby? "

question. I then spent several days biting my fingernails and

rehearsing the " you're going to be a grandma " speech. And exploring

the web, and going " Um, yes " to various " signs of pregnancy " lists.

Everyone knows about morning sickness and cravings (neither of which

I've had, unless you count a mad craving for salad which I get this

time every year), but I've had things like tingly bosoms and a

metallic taste in my mouth. All very weird.

I got the results on Monday 17 and they were negative. So I was

confused at the nurse over the phone, who was puzzled back and made

an appointment for Thursday to a: get the damn smear done and b: talk

to the doctor.

Anyway ThursdayI toddled to the surgery. And I explained things to

the nurse, and she asked helpful questions like " so do you feel

pregnant? " (I'll confess it threw me - I've never been pregnant, what

does it " feel " like?) At which point I told her about my forays onto

the net, and whilst I realised that it's very easy to get

psychosomatic symptoms, clocking up 7 out of ten without knowing any

of them was rather concerning. We went through the " have you taken

any antibiotics " and " have you had a chest infection / been ill " to

which the answers were all " no. "

But the pregnancy test came back negative. But I'm still 20 days late

at that point. So something's up, but no clue what. So she chatted to

the doctor and relayed the information, and as he had my notes he

decided that the priority was the smear.

End result Thursday was that I had a smear done – and it was the most

painful smear I've ever had. As any female who has had them will be

able to confirm, they're not pleasant at the best of times, and it's

somewhat embarrassing having your legs akimbo and exposing an area

that normally only you partner would see. So she carefully inserts

the plastic thing that keeps everything stretched, and finds my

cervix which means I'm feeling uncomfortable anyway as it means

shoving bits that are not normally shoved. But then she did the

scrape, and it went from " uncomfortable and slightly weird " which is

the normal feeling to " Ow that actually hurts. " And apparently it

started bleeding. So I'm not only late, I'm also mighty sensitive in

that area, and considerably more than normal.

At which point she asked if I'd had intercourse recently (yes) and

had it been painful then (no).

And the today - I'm feeling really nauseous and my head's spinning.

Having been informed by various people (including my mum) that

despite what the GP says, it is possible to have a false negative;

I'm rather concerned that I may be pregnant after all. But it might

not be. So my main query is:

a: assuming I am pregnant what sort of thing should I be looking to

add to my diet? I'm over weight and am currently on a diet consisting

of calorie counting and seeing how many vegetables I can pile on my

plate as opposed to any of the fashion-fad things; but should I be

looking specifically for veg or herbal thing? And should I be cutting

anything out? I'm not veggie, don't eat pre-processed foods that much

unless you count tinned tomatoes, don't drink alchohol or coffee and

don't smoke so I think I'm reasonably ok.

b: if I'm not pregnant any ideas what it could be or anything I

should be doing to try and get my body back in balance? I've looked

through the files and don't think I need to total cleanse as it seems

a little drastic and I don't have the bowel issues described. I'm

looking at the calcium formula and the total female ones, but I don't

know if I should be avoiding anything in my potential condition.

Also I'm in the UK so some stuff may well not be available.

Thanks for your help in advance

Hi Kath, First off how old are you? I am 41 and had a

cycle that was 54 days? I had all the signs of

pregnancy at that time too and it was negative also.

My cycles have been irregular but never to that point.

I can go from 26-31 days usually. Dr. didn't have a

clue as to why my cycle was so late. I had all the

bloodwork and it came out normal. They told me it was

normal to have irregular cycles and that even missing

a cycle at my age is normal? I don't know if this is

true and I'm sure someone here will be able to help

you. I just wanted to let you know you are not alone.

I hope someone can give you some answers:)
