(Address: University of Houston-Victoria, Victoria, TX 77901, USA. E-mail: GunasekeraR ). Summary: In an in vitro study involving androgen independent cultured malignant type II tumor cells, grapefruit-derived and commercial lycopene and lutein preparations were found to inhibit AT3 cells (malignant androgen-responsive, slow-growing tumor cells with well developed epithelium and stroma) in a concentration- and time- dependent manner, while no such effect was found when these preparations were applied to their parent type 1 tumor epithelial cells. Comparing the effects of lutein to lycopene, lutein showed a slightly lesser effect. No synergistic effect was observed when both lutein and lycopene were administered together. The authors conclude, " These studies are consistent with epidemiological studies that show inverse relationships of these carotenoids with prostate cancer.
