Hello everyone. I am new to this site. I have lerked awhile back and

decided to post a question now.

My daughter is 2 1/2 with mild CP. A mom I know with a sn's child told

me how wonderful Flaxseed Oil is for the body, Brain etc. and really

saw a difference in her child after their use with Flaxseed. Another

mom tells me that Fish Oil is better than Flaxseed Oil.

I am hopeing someone can tell me the difference in these two oils. I

am going to ask our Dr. about starting this in my daughters diet, but

I just wanted to learn more about it first on my own. Thanks so much

in advance. Kristen

Hi Kristen,

There are two Essential Fatty Acids (EFAs) that the body needs because

it cannot make them:

1. Omega 3 - alpha linoleic acid (LNA)

2. Omega 6 - linoleic acid (LA)

LNA is found in flax seed, canola, and hemp seed oil, among others.

But flax seed oil contains the largest amount of LNA.

LA is found in safflower, sunflower, hemp, flax, pumpkin seed oil,

among others.

Fish oil contains two important fatty acids that are the 'usable'

forms of Omega 3 in the body:

1. eiocosapentaenoic acid (EPA)

2. docosahexaenoic acid (DHA)

The body is able to convert LNA to EPA and DHA through a series of

metabolic steps that lengthens the carbon chain. However, this

conversion process can be inefficient for a variety of reasons such as

lack of other nutrients for the enzymes needed for the conversion.

So, the difference in taking fish oil instead of flax seed oil is that

you are removing the need for the body to perform this conversion

process. This is probably preferred for people who are already in

poor health.

Flax oil is a perfectly good supplement and usually cheaper than fish

oil supplements, but, in my opinion, is a good supplement for someone

in reasonably good health already who is pursuing a maintenance health

programme.

(Just for info: LA can be converted by the body to gamma-linolenic

acid (GLA). GLA can be found in borage, black currant seed, and

evening primrose oil)

A very good book to read about fats and fatty acids is " Fats that

Heal, Fats that Kill " by Udo Erasmus. He discusses the EFAs is much

greater detail.

Hope this helps,

Sharon

Much of the brain benefit from the fatty acids in flaxseed oil is in the

conversion to EPA and DHA ''brain nutrients'' is my understanding. Fish oil

typically HAS those fatty acids already made so your body doesn't have to do the

job of switching. The flaxseed oil is great but may have a low conversion rate

to those specific nutrients. That's my understanding anyway of the biggest

difference. You just have to be very careful who you're getting your fish oils

from because some companies are less diligent in their monitoring heavy

metals and such that may accumulate in the fish. I buy from a company that uses

little fish, lower on the food chain and tests all their batches, makes sure

they're completely pure, etc.

My doctor told me to try flaxseed oil or fish oil to help lower my tryglicerides

and cholestorol. I tried the flaxseed oil first with not much results. The fish

oil was another story..it made a HUGE difference in both. I will never stop

taking it!

The difference is that the Omega 3 in flaxseed oil is a short-chain

form that is unusable by the body until the body converts it to the

long-chain forms found in fish oil. That conversion process is very

inefficient in even the healthiest of physiologies, hence the

popularity of the immediately bioavailable fish oil.

Both are high in Omega 3 ,however there are some differences.Flax is a short

chain molecule with 17 hydrogen's attached and fish oil is a long chain with 21

hydrogen's attached .In the body flaxseed oil must be completed to a 21 length

chain. If you're going to use fish oil make sure it is certified to be free of

heavy metals and PBC's.

Personally I use both,Flax in the morning and fish oil at night!!!!!

Hi All:

I have an unusual question. In 1994 I weighed over 300 pounds. I lost a hundred

and kept it off all these years. After losing that weight, I ended up with a

roll of flabby skin hanging from my abdomen. I've started losing weight

again--down aobut 28 poounds in the last four or five months. I'm seriously

considering changing to a restricted calorie lifestyle to control my type 2

diabetes. My goal would be to eat about 1100 to 1200 calories a day. If I do

this, I'll end up losing another 50 or so pounds. Is there anything I can do to

help reduce the amount of loose skin I'll have in the end?

I hat the thought that my arms, legs, butt and boobs are gonna look like empty

socks.

Any suggestions?

Vicki Lockwood

THEY ARE BOTH GOOD BUT, YOU CAN SMELL A LOT WHEN SWEAT WITH FISH OIL.

Both are rich in omega 3 so they are good.

But it's important to get an organic source of fish oil because many fish oil

capsules contain heavy metals from the polluted water. Vasile

Try a low glycimic diet. It's great for losing weight and for controling BG

levels . Having baggy skin is better than the dangers of diabetes . If you

don't control it ,you might end up losing weight the hard way ;when they cut a

leg off. Which is worse loose skin or an amputation. The shin can alway be

removed later.
