I've been on lipitor over 2 years. For the past 6 months I've been

experiencing all kinds of mucsle aches and flu like symptoms. My doctor

didn't think this had anything to do with taking lipitor. I'm ready to

stop taking it to see if its the cause of me not feeling well. I

looking for a natural alternative. Any suggestions?

An interesting story from the Wash. Post

Is Your Doctor in Denial?

Survey Finds Physicians Often Dismiss Complaints About Drugs' Side

Effects

By Ishani Ganguli

Special to The Washington Post

Tuesday, August 28, 2007; Page HE04

'On many online message boards and Internet chat rooms, anxious

patients share details about the muscle pain and memory loss they

have noticed since they started taking statins to lower their

cholesterol. A new study suggests these people may be seeking

validation for good reason: Some of their complaints might otherwise

be going unheard.

According to a survey of 650 patients published last week in Drug

Safety, a peer-reviewed journal, doctors frequently ignored or

dismissed patients' concerns about such side effects. The study

suggests this pattern of reaction goes beyond statins to other

drugs.'

The piece also notes that.....When doctors fail to recognize a

patient's symptoms as drug side effects, more than that patient's

care is put at risk. Because the doctor makes no " adverse event

report " to the Food and Drug Administration, the regulatory agency

may underestimate the problem, and other doctors and patients may

assume the drug is safer than it is. " ... The researchers

noted ...... " Person after person spontaneously [told] us that

their doctors told them that symptoms like muscle pain couldn't have

come from the drug. We were surprised at how prevalent that

experience was, " said Beatrice Golomb, associate professor of

medicine and the study's lead researcher. " ...... and

noted... '.According to experts, muscle pain and other side

effects occur in up to 30 percent of statin patients, by some

estimates, and often lead doctors to stop or change a prescription.

But patients surveyed said their doctors rarely linked their

symptoms to statins -- even when the symptoms were well-documented

as side effects. " ....

and the piece noted ....

" Golomb speculated that doctors' actions might reflect the relative

dearth of information on the downsides of statins. " Ad campaigns

that preserve statins' miracle drug image are more powerful than

education about side effects, " she said.

The findings raise important concerns about American drug safety

monitoring, said Harvard Medical School professor Jerry Avorn,

author of " Powerful Medicines: The Benefits, Risks and Costs of

Prescription Drugs. "

" We already know that there is horrendous underreporting of side

effects. Ninety to 99 percent of serious side effects are not

reported by doctors, " he said . "

Mary, I suggest you look up the " side effects of lipitor " or " side

effects of statins " on line. You will find people all over the country

talking about the horrific side effects they have experienced from

statin use. You will also read the horrid side effects on numerous

sites. I have at one time or another been on all the statins and have

been able to tolerate NONE of them. I had the flu like aches, week

muscles, unsteady gait, memory loss. The last statin I tried was

pravachol. It cause quarter sized knots up and down the backs of my

legs. I saw a massage therapists for 6 weeks trying to work the

PAINful knots out of my tissue. At that time, one of my docs told me I

should never be put on another statin. I began just adding a tsp. of

fiber to water and drinking it before each meal. With that, I got the

best chlesterol reading I have ever had 6 months later. Cholesterol is

not the problem it is made out to be anyway. Do a search on

cholesterol and I think you will be surprised that so many docs are

pushing those drugs without trying other means to lower cholesterol or

researching cholesterol and the effects of to low a cholesterol reading.

Red Yeast Rice is still a statin drug and although it might help

lower your cholesterol, it still has the same adverse side effects as

any of the statin drugs out there (Lipitor, Mevacor, etc.) Taking

statins is an artificial and extremely destructive way of lowering

cholesterol because while it never addresses the reason why your

cholesterol is high in the first place, it wreaks havoc in the body.

Beware of Statins including red yeast rice.

Yes it IS the Lipitor causing your problems. The same happened to me

until I stopped Lipitor! Then I was fine in 2-3 wks.

As an RN previously working in a nursing home where there were many

volunteers, I had a very busy and energetic volunteer in my Dept who

gradually became sicker and sicker until she told me she couldn't work

anymore. She had distension and terrible pains in her hips and legs, and

just felt very ill -I asked her what medication she was on - when she told

me Lipitor (as well as many other things) I checked with a doctor who said

it was OK to stop that medication suddenly and completely - so I told her to

stop taking it immediately. I sent her back up information from lists like

these and she started educating her doctor. Within two weeks she was pain

free. Consulting a doctor (no details given) I encouraged her to reduce

various other medications and offered her other options instead - especially

CoQ10 for her heart and Green Lipped Mussel for random arthritic pains -

that was over 2 years ago - at the moment she is touring Europe with her

cousin - she has never felt better.

It can be done - but if you are going against the wishes of your doctor and

he is your " medical advisor " then it gets a bit awkward. This womans doctor

was elderly and she had gone to him for years and years - he was not happy

with the changes we made.

Best,

Jane

I don't consider doctors to be medical advisors anymore but rather

just legalized drug pushers. The best thing for my health is to

visit them as little as possible. JMO.

Marina,

Does it matter what kind of fiber? Which do you use?

Thanks so much for this info!
