Guest guest
Hi, That was an extremely interesting article....thanks for posting it. Asian women have significantly lower rates of all estrogen based cancers. The reason for this is that the typical Asian female's cycle is 31-32 days, not that of an American female's, which is 28 days. Breast and gynecologic cancer risk is directly associated with the length of time one is exposed to estrogen over a lifetime. Those three days difference in a cycle tremendously slashes cancer risk. The difference in cycle time is attributed to ingestion of endemic phytoestrogens like soy, naturally present in the Asian diet. Phytoestrogens block the receptors for more potent estrogens like estradiol, estrone, and estriol. If you take an Asian female, and bring her to live in the USA, her cycle will often change, since these phytoestrogens are removed from the diet. Additionally, the USA uses a great deal of plastic to store foods, which provide xenoestrogens, increasing estrogen levels even more. Her estrogen based cancer risk will also increase significantly. Conversely, Asians have a MUCH higher risk of hepatic, lung, and certain other cancers, due to consumption of sushi, sashimi, squid, cat fish, crabs, and other raw fish, which contain parasites ( liver flukes, cod worms, lung flukes etc). Raw fish is bad business unless it is frozen at sub zero for at least 4 days. The best means to lessen parasitic risk is to cook completely, however if one insists on consuming raw fish, some scientists advocate freezing, thawing, and then refreezing raw fish to assure parasitic risk is minimal. Thanks for the interesting Jane Plant article. Best, Lisa
