Guest guest
conference announcement Emerging Topics in Breast Cancer and the Environment Research Fourth Annual Early Environmental Exposures Meeting November 8 - 9, 2007 Westin Hotel, Cincinnati, OH hosted by the BREAST CANCER AND THE ENVIRONMENT RESEARCH CENTERS funded by National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences National Cancer Institute Emerging Topics in Breast Cancer and the Environment Research is an annual conference sponsored by the Breast Cancer and the Environment Research Centers (BCERC). The purpose of this conference is to present the latest research from the centers and other studies addressing the basic biology of breast development, environmental exposures and gene-environment interactions that influence pubertal maturation and susceptibility to carcinogenesis, and effective public health communications pertinent to these findings. Environment is most broadly defined to include air, water, soil and the homes, buildings and cities in which we live, work and play. Environment also includes the foods we eat, chemical and physical exposures, radiation and psychosocial factors. Most all of these dimensions of the environment are being studied in the BCERCs. Community participation and advocacy concerns are integrated into the format and content of the conference. The ‘06 conference took place in Oakland, CA. Session topics included radiation carcinogenesis in humans and rodent models; environmental exposures and pubertal timing/development and breast cancer. Updates of each of the BCERC research and education projects were provided as well. Presentation summaries are available on-line at _www.bcerc.org/2006mtg_ (file://www.bcerc.org/2006mtg) For information about the ‘07 conference scheduled for Nov.8-9 in Cincinnati, OH go to _http://www.bcerc.org/2007mtg/index.htm_ (http://www.bcerc.org/2007mtg/index.htm) . The Call for Abstracts is available at _http://www.bcerc.org/2007mtg/call4abs.htm_ (http://www.bcerc.org/2007mtg/call4abs.htm) . Nursing CEUs are pending. The Breast Cancer and the Environment Research Centers are funded for seven years by the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences and the National Cancer Institute. This network of four centers is conducting epidemiologic and biologic studies investigating the influence of early environmental exposures on pubertal maturation and mammary gland development and the potential of these developmental changes to alter the risk of breast cancer later in life. A transdisciplinary research paradigm guides the collaborative research and education projects. Collaborations between researchers and advocates, both within and across the centers, are essential to the success of the BCERCs.
