Guest guest
From The FMS Community Newsletter FMS Community July Book Review FMS Community Book Review By: Jane Kohler-Lutz This months selection is " Fibromyalgia: The Complete Guide from Medical Experts and Patients " Jones and Bartlett, Publishers. 330 pages. Soft Cover. Author: Sharon Ostalecki, PH.D. I read so much material on Fibromyalgia, that at times I want to throw my hands up and quit. It seems people can write about a topic over and over, while saying nothing new. As I waded through chapter one, I thought, " Here we go again. " That thought didn't last through chapter three, I was hooked and quickly read the entire book. I learned something new in each chapter and was left feeling my time was well spent. I feel that this book can change a pain patient's quality of life. It gives you information and tools you can use to work with your doctor, dentists, podiatrist and family. The author, Doctor Ostalecki is not only an advocate, and speaker on Fibromyalgia, she has lived with Fibro for the past fifteen years. As I read this book, I came to feel that it was created, or grown, more so than it was simply written. It is a collaboration of author, health care professionals, and pain patients, a collaboration that was a formula for success. The list of professional contributors to the book number eighteen and include MD's, Occupational Therapists, Yoga teachers, DO's, Pain Management Specialists, Neurologists, Optometrists, Pain Psychologists, DDS, Clinical Psychologists, Nutritionists, and Pharmacists. The entire book breaks down complex medical issues into understandable terms, and focuses on the most important things you need to know to understand, and manage fibromyalgia. I liked the fact that each issue was assigned an individual chapter, so I wasnt forced to turn to the index to find something I had read on sleep. I only need to go to the sleep chapter. Chapter one would be of interest to those newly diagnosed, as it touches on Fibro symptoms, diagnosis, and finding a doctor, all stuff that many of us " old timers " have read time and time again. Chapter Two is where it gets interesting, it is dedicated to the pain patient as mentioned, from there you continue on through twenty one more chapters, each one more informative than the last. Thanks to the contributors and their experience, you will learn about sleep, how it works and why you need it. Learn about trigger point injections, nerve blocks, advanced therapies, drug therapies, herbal and prescription medication interaction, IBS, Acupuncture, eye problems, yoga, nutrition, TMJ and the nervous system. See if your thyroid plays a part in Fibro and how to handle pregnancy and motherhood. Foot and ankle troubles are addressed as well as self help ideas, such as journaling, saying no, delegating and more. Men are addressed in this book! Men suffer from fibro but information on the experience from the male perspective is hard to find. This reviewer gives this book Four out of Four stars. The book is available on Amazon.com http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/0763746401/thefibromlcommun (This link will take you directly to Dr. Ostaleckis page) The FMS Community will be offering a copy of this book in our next contest. ********************************************* FAIR USE NOTICE This site contains copyrighted material the use of which has not always been specifically authorized by the copyright owner.
