Guest guest
Balloon releases occurred on Tues & Wed., May 22 and 23. The balloon release was done right in front of the Aerojet Ordnance gate, just off the edge of Old State Rt. 34, outside of Jonesborough, Tennessee. The balloons contained the following message on a bright pink slip of paper rolled up and slipped into the biodegradable balloon before inflation with helium ... ~~~ PEACE BE WITH YOU, This balloon was released on May 22, 2007 across the road from Aerojet Ordnance Tennessee, a company that makes weapons from nuclear waste left over from the uranium enrichment process. These munitions are used in Iraq and Afghanistan where our troops breathe their poisonous radioactive dust. America's own soldiers and their families, along with Iraqi and Afghani families, are suffering from above normal incidences of birth defects, as well as the symptoms of heavy metal and radiation poisoning. If you received this balloon, you may have breathed pollutants emitted by Aerojet Ordnance, 1367 Old State Route 34, Jonesborough, TN 37659 USA. Please help us learn the reach of Aerojet's air emissions by mailing this balloon back to us at the following address. Feel free to write to Aerojet & your public officials too. Thank you, in advance, for mailing back this balloon and including your return address. DEMOCRACY NOW TRI-CITIES P.O. Box 421 Bristol, TN 37621 USA ~~~ Over 400 balloons were launched over the course of 2 days, usually Christian Peacemaker Teams & friends would let 50+ fly at a time. THE MOST IMPORTANT FINDING OF THESE BALLOON RELEASES IS THAT HILLY NORTHEAST TENNESSEE'S BREEZES TOOK THE BALLOONS IN DIFFERENT DIRECTIONS EACH TIME THERE WAS A LAUNCH. EVEN WITHIN THE SAME HOUR WIND DIRECTION CHANGED. Scratch the long-held notion that our winds always blew from the southwest to the northeast. We really do all live downwind of weaponized uranium explosions, manufacturers or stockpiles! On Wednesday, May 23rd, Christian Peacemaker Teams & Sierra Club's Radiation Committee (which I, Linda, chair) jointly held a press conference across from Aerojet. Kel Smalley of Aerojet was invited to participate, but did not. The Sierra Club's position is that nuclear waste in a bomb (euphemistically called " DU " ) spreads radiation not only onto the communities where the weapons are being made, but also where they are exploded. Further, the global fallout from hundreds of tons of detonations is causing man-made radiation exposures that are compounding background, radon, and other chemical exposure risks. Thursday involved another string of meetings, plus a " virtual balloon release " over the internet. A number of list serves were sent a brief message asking that they write to Aerojet and its corporate parent, GenCorp, asking that the company stop using nuclear waste as penetrator cores. Since this message was broadcast, I have heard back from 2-3 folks but, hopefully, many more just failed to copy Cliff or me on their emails to Aerojet and GenCorp. ~~~ Now is your chance to join the tracking of weaponized uranium emissions! Peace be with you, If this email reaches you, you may have breathed emissions from Aerojet Ordnance Tennessee, a company that makes weapons from nuclear waste left over from the uranium enrichment process. You may also be downwind of Iraq and Afghanistan where hundreds of tons of weaponized uranium (WU) have been exploded. The poison dust discharged by those thousands of burned bombs has fallen not only on the war zones, but has also been circling the globe. If you are concerned about the continued use of radioactive, toxic weapons of mass destruction by the Pentagon, please write emails to the following individuals who are responsible for weapons manufacturing at Aerojet Ordnance Tennessee. AOT (a subsidiary of GenCorp of California) is one of the larger uranium penetrator core manufacturers with military contracts. Charles Pepper McCary, AOT-Jonesborough: _charles.mccary_ (charles.mccary) Linda Cutler, GenCorp-California: _lcutler_ (lcutler) Claudia Smith, GenCorp-California: _claudia.smith_ (claudia.smith) Please copy Cliff Kindy of Christian Peacemaker Teams at _kindy_ (kindy) , and Linda Modica of Sierra Club Radiation Committee at _linda.c.modica_ (linda.c.modica) on your messages to Aerojet. Thanking you for taking action to stop weaponized uranium munitions, Linda. ************************************** See what's free at http://www.aol.com.
