Doctors in Britain have identified a syndrome, where senior adults taking an acid-blocking heartburn medication (Pepcid, Zantac, Prilosec) which can result in a vitamin B12 deficiency and a resultant short-term memory deficit, also experience ineffectiveness of their thyroid hormone pills. Not only do acid-blocking heartburn medications impair the absorption of vitamin B12, but also the absorption of supplemental thyroid hormone. Thyroid medications go by these brand names: thyroxine (T4 hormone)- Levothroid®, Levoxyl®, Synthroid®, or Unithroid® , or Cytomel®, which is T3, Thyrolar®, which is a synthetic mixture of T4 and T3, and dessicated thyroid (Armour®), which is a T4/T3 mixture made from powdered animal (pig) thyroid glands). If your thyroid medication isn’t working, you may have a condition called hypochlorhydria, or low stomach acid.
