Guest guest
USDA Must Stop Playing Chicken with Food Safety Stop dirty chickens! According to the January 2007, issue of Consumer Reports 8 out of 10 chickens harbor dangerous bacteria, compared to 5 out of 10 four years ago. To protect yourself: be sure chicken does not drip on anything else in the refrigerator immediately wash hands, knives and cutting boards after handling cook thoroughly Chicken are contaminated by two disease-causing bacteria, salmonella and campylobacter. These two organisms made more than 3.4 million people sick and killed 700 in the most recent year for which the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention compiled data. Campylobacter not only causes stomach problems, but can also lead to meningitis, arthritis, and Guillian-Barre syndrome, a neurological disorder. Consumer Reports found big increases campylobacter contamination. The USDA has no standards, rules, or limits on campylobacter. Consumers Union petitioned the USDA in 2002 to set a standard for campylobacter, but the agency took no action. Ask USDA to reduce dangerous bacteria in chicken now!
