Guest guest
Hi Health Activists, In the final hours of the last (109th) Congress the Restrictive Adverse Event Reporting bill for Dietary Supplements was passed with mainly Democratic votes in one of the few examples of bi-partisanship in the most partisan congress I can remember. Both Nancy Pelosi, the new speaker and Steny Hoyer the new majority leader voted for the bad adverse reporting bill.Actually, it may have been the opening shot of the next congressional campaign for the Republicans to come back against the newly elected democrats who won in relatively close races in 2006. If you live in any of these close swing districts, please contact the new Representative and impress the importance of the keeping dietary supplements available without restrictions.Ask the representative to go to Speaker Pelosi and Majority Leader Hoyer and tell them how important this issue is to their constituents. If enough of these swing representatives do this, the Democratic Leadership may change their view on the issue. In 1994 one of the issues that led to the Republican sweep that year was the delaying tactics of Democratic chairman Henry Waxman of the Health Commerce Subcommittee in bottling up the bill until the final hours of that congress. Please note that both Waxman and Commerce Committee Chairman John Dingell did not vote on the adverse event reporting bill. I hope it was because they knew it was a very hot political issue and did not want to give the Republican Leadership gift of crucial votes to pass a controversial bill that will be used against the democrats in 2008, unfortunately it could have been because it was 3 am and they wanted to get some sleep. The most vulnerable Democratic representatives in the closest races in 2006 are the following districts: the losing total is for the Republican candidate,if the total percentages are not 100% there were third party candidates. 1- Joe Courtney, CT-2 won 50.1% to 49.9% 2-Partick Murphy, PA-8 won 50.3 to 49.7 3-John Hall,NY-19 won 51 to 49 4-John Barrow,GA-12 won 50 to 49 5-Jim Marshall,GA3 won 51 to 49 6- Dave Loesback,IA-2 won 51 to 49 7- Steve Kagen,WI-8 won 51 to 49 8-Tim Mahoney,FL-16 won 50 to 48 9-Ron Klein, FL-22 won 51 to 47.2 10-Nancy Boyda, KS-2 won 51% 47.5 11-John Yarmuth,KY-3 won 51 to 48 12-Harry Mitchell,AZ-5 won 51% to 47 13-Baron Hill,IN-9 won 50% to 46 14-Carol Shea-Porter,NH-1 won 52 to 48 15-Jason Altmire,PA-4 won 52 to 48 16-Leonard Boswell,IA-3 won 52 to 47 17- Kristin Gillebrand,NY-24 won 53 to 47 18- Tom Walz,MN-1 won 53 to 47 19-Christopher Carney,PA-won 53 to 47 20-Jerry McNerney CA-11 won 53 to 47 21- Paul Hodes, NH-2 won 53 to 46 22-Mike Arcuri,NY-24 won 54 to 45 23-Joe Donnelly,IN-2 won 54 to 46 24-Julia Carson,IN-7 won 54 to 46 25-Heath Shuler,NC-11 won 54 to 46 26- Darlene Hooley,OR-5 won 54 to 43 27-Bruce Braley,IA-1 won 55 to 43 28-Joe Sestak,PA-7 won 56 to 44 29-Peter Welch,VT won 55to 45 30-Nick Lampson,TX-22 won 52 to 42 31- Christopher Murphy,CT-5 won 56 to 44 32- Melissa Bean IL-8, won 51 to 44 33--Gabrielle Giffords-AZ-54 to 42 34-Ed Perlmutter,CO-7 won 55 to 42 34- Zack Space,OH-18 won by 24%, but he ran in the district of Bob Ney who was involved in the Abramoff scandal, so that was an aberration and the district is close. Most of these are new members elected in 2006, Julia Carson-Indiana-7 voted for the adverse event reporting bill in the last congress and Darlene Hooley,Oregon-5 did not vote on the bill. arnold
