Guest guest
Thanks to this Board and to the Califpacific who referred me to this Board, I started taking vitamins and minerals and other supplements a few days ago and already there is a definite decrease in my depression. I am sleeping better, I can get up in the morning and I can function. Since I was applying for a job (I retired almost a year ago), I was not only depressed and anxious but then the additional concern of whether or not I could take the job (I actually did get the job) -- all of this was WAY too much to handle just a few days ago, and now I think I can handle the job. It's getting a little better every day. In fact, in just a few days, I've really come a long way. Bless you all. Two questions: Has anyone ever come out of their depression by using only nutrition, vitamins, minerals, etc? Has anyone gone back to prescription medication(s)? My concern is this: will I always feel just at 'half mast' if I don't go back on anti-depressants? Is there anyone here who has really felt very well using nutrition, vitamins, etc.? I can certainly live feeling a little more than just mildly depressed. I just don't want to, of course. Secondly: I see that Amino Acids are good for depression. Amino Acids can be bought individually and also all in one bottle (liquid or tablet). Is it better to buy them individually or can I just purchase an 'all-in-one'? Wouldn't it be better to take all of them at once, because, after all, they function together, don't they? Thank you.
Guest guest
Regarding your first question, Frances, two of my dear relations have been out of major depression just by nutrients. One was on psychiatric drugs but the turn around came in the absence of these drugs (we had run out of stock) and I started the nutrients. But you remember to raise up the dose of nutrients when feeling stressed. One of the two relations has allergy problems too. We are struggeling with that now. Regarding your second query, in the morning you can take the mixture of aminos, in the evening tryptophan alone is preferable. By the by, there are two type of depression nutritionally: The one in which one sleeps a lot and is in lethargy. You need tyrosine for this problem. Also you may have at that time sub-clinical hypothyroidism and/or low adrenal functioning. The second type of depression means insomnia, nervous anxiety, irritability. You need tryptophan and/or 5HTP for this. Best wishes. Guest guest
Frances, I battled depression my whole life until I realised the connection to nutrition and nutrients. When I stopped the prescription meds and switched my bad habits to good ones, I felt better and better but it was months before I felt really great, way better than when taking prescription meds. The prescription meds might work for a while but you risk great chances of their side affects catching up with you and causing other health issues - diabetes for one, plus they only are masking your symptoms, not addressing the root cause. That root cause can cause other health issues as well. Now there are many health problems besides nutrient deficiencies that can cause major depression. I do not think much of allopathic medicine but I do give them credit for having great equipment by which to take xrays and do testing. Major depression is a common first symptom of cancer, particularly pancreatic cancer which gives little other signs. I think someone mentioned thyroid problems which is another of a long list of illnesses that can cause depression. Use your own judgement but if you find limited improvement, you might want to consider getting a good check up. Then you can take those results and if other problems are detected, deal with options of treating them. Guest guest
along with dietary changes--loose the white flour/ sugar stuff, go for leafy greens and include some quality fish oil daily---please include exercise in your daily regimen. As little as a 30 minute walk a day can increase feelings of well being...anything you can do to get the heart rate up there...of course check with your doctor before beginning ANY exercise program if you are not sure of your health status.....good luck!! - Mary Wednesday, December 06, 2006 6:33 PM Re: Major Depression Frances, I battled depression my whole life until I realised the connection to nutrition and nutrients. Guest guest
Frances, Mary's comment made me realize that there can be another source of a depression -- food allergies. I have heard people talk on TV about this. I just returned from Austria where I learned alot about food allergies (and sugar reactions) -- the source of chronic fatigue, asthma, joint pain...and many other problems, including depression. It does take awhile for the " good nutition " to kick in. Do not give up if results are not immediate. I was having a very bad reaction to sugar. I would give it up for 2 or 3 days and then say this did not work. It actually took 10 days before I felt better...Lynn - Mary Wednesday, December 06, 2006 6:33 PM Re: Major Depression Frances, I battled depression my whole life until I realised the connection to nutrition and nutrients. Guest guest
To all of you who answered my post, thank you. You gave me a lot of ideas and help. And, yes, as soon as I get some medical insurance, I will be getting a good physical. Thank you again. Forgive me for being so short. I just woke up not long ago, and it takes a while before my vit/min 'regimen' kicks in. Guest guest
I just heard a news bulletin on NBC. Research was conducted with people on depression. I only got that they switched to a high protein diet (similar to the South Beach type) and took supplements...I only heard tyrosine...Lynn

Guest guest
HI! Newcomer here. Anne, that is amazing. I am reading a lot about treating people with B vitamins for anxiety. May I ask--did you do anything besides the vitamins, or were the vitamins wholly responsible? Thanks, Joanne , " Anne " <annroc2004 wrote: > > Yes; i have come out of my depression and my Obsessive Compulsions by > increasing my levels of *The B-Vitamins; particuarly *Thiamine Vit. > B1.
