Guest guest
I'm only going to talk about my experiences. When I was on more than one med, I became suicidal. I checked myself into the psych ward of a hospital, (where I panicked because I didn't have access to my own regular doctor). The hospital doctor took me off all my meds. (In a hospital setting, that was fairly safe; I am not at all suggesting anyone do this alone.) It was the best thing that ever happened to me, because one of the meds I had been taking had been making me suicidal and more anxious. (I had thought that was true but my regular psych had not listened to me.) In the hospital, I was put on one med -- just one. I was fine. I could function. Life wasn't great but it was easier. THEN I found an MD who was also a Doctor of Oriental Medicine. Through acupuncture and herbs, I got off THAT med. I have not been on any meds in a few years. Then I recently retired and moved out of state and could no longer see my MD/DOM. The depression and anxiety started to return. I changed my diet, started taking vit/min supplements again, went back to meditating, learned basic acupressure (not acupuncture -- acupuressure to anxiety -- still want acupuncture though also) AND I just recently found a well-qualified DOM in my new city. And now that I just got a job, maybe I can afford to go (since my med ins through my job won't pay). Also, I just read Yoga for Depression, and I'll be starting Yoga as soon as I can afford it. anxiety365 Sat, 2 Dec 2006 5:17 AM Severe Anxiety and Insomnia MODERATOR'S NOTE- This group is not meant to be used as a forum to recommend, treat or prescribe. Instead, I would ask the group to suggest places that this person can further research for himself the alternatives. I have all but given up on traditional medicine. I've had severe panic and sleep problems (how can you sleep when you're in a constant state of panic?) for 15 or so years. My system just can no longer tolerate the SSRI's, anti-psychotics and others of these new genration meds. I'm starting to have physical health problems now and I think they might be due to these dangerous meds. I've been on most all of them at one time or another. Doctor's refuse to allow me the only medication that did help, so now I am looking into alternatives. Can anyone give me some suggestions of natural alternatives? Thank you. ______________________ Check out the new AOL. Guest guest
I have used melatonin ( 1-3 mg about an hour or so before wanting to sleep). Pretty effective; and I haven’t seen any side effects. I read of a medical study in an Alzheimers unit of a nursing home where melatonin reduced insomnia, and surprise surprise “agitated behavior”- not sleeping for a week or more has that effect on me too. The study used 9 mg. I personally don’t think I would take that much. 1-2 mg is usually quite effective. I have also used tea made from skullcap, valerian root, passion flower, and hops. Use hot water for all except the valerian root. Valeriana needs to steep in cold water for about a day or so in the frig. Mix it all together and store in frig when done. And Kava kava at times has brought relief for anxiety. Most of these can be found at a botanica, yerberia, or a place like Sun Harvest. (I also had been the route, years ago, with Zoloft, remeron, ativan, zanax, etc) Michael On Behalf Of anxiety365 Saturday, December 02, 2006 4:17 AM Severe Anxiety and Insomnia
Guest guest
I have had great results from EFT (Emoitonal Freedom Technique)--I have had bridge phobias for years and starting doing EFT in the last 2 months. I ordered the Gary Craig starter DVD's and started watching them and started practicing EFT. I have been able to drive over the Bay Bridge to San Francisco on numerous occasions now without any anxiety. I plan to use the EFT for post-traumatic stress disorder and other issues as well. I am a believer. IT WORKS!!! Just try it. It is so worth the money I put out. I feel so much freedom from fear around that issue now. Good luck to you and I so sympathize with you. I've had severe depression and anxiety at various times in my life--wish I had had these tools sooner. It would have improved the quality of my life. Guest guest
I know people who are or were on Dr. Abram Hoffer's orthomolecular vitamin and mineral program for anxiety, one for depression and one for schizophrenia. Dr. Hoffer practices about 45 miles away; he has several books out and a web page or two on which he describes a few cases.
