Good grief it is one thing after another for us here. Dr says he absolutely has to have surgery - it is pretty bad. He has him on Bactrim right now until we can get into a surgeon. He first complained of this last summer but we thought it was just a boil so we treated it as such. We took him to the Dr clear back in Oct. and the Dr said it looked like it was healing and did not seem concerned. He has had several 'flare ups' which I now know is normal. This thing is really gross and he also a big hole which is referred to as a 'sinus'. I am scared to death for my child to have this surgery - everything I have read says extremely painful. I think I was more worried than he was. My son didn't have any pain at all. I still have to wash it and dress it everyday. The dressing is vitally important as doing it right may prevent it from occurring again Make sure you don't leave the hospital until you watch them dress it so you will know that you are doing it right. They didn't stitch this wound so it is just like a large open bit. You will have to help him in the shower and get the hose with the shower attachment that fits onto your shower so you can spray it clean from underneath. Cleaning is what helps it heal too. Also on some of the internet sights about these cysts, they tell you about a "aquacel" brand of packing. You pack the wound with that. It is excellent although it is rather expensive. It is like a dry ribbon sort of strip that has seaweed properties in it to help with the healing, It absorbs anything in the wound and it goes jelly like and doesn't stick like other packing would. When i was young i use to get this Pilonidal Cyst, and my mom use to put garlic juice on, the pain was horrible for couple minutes and then it will pass, and then she would paint the area with Iodine. I still get Pilonidal Cyst now and then but with the first pain i start the treatment and it goes away. So i suggest garlic juice, iodine 4- 5 times daily, hot compreses to help open the and drain the sore. Tee tree oil, cayenne tincture or cream, and more garlic it stinks but it does the trick. Hopefully this will help your son if you choose to go the natural way. Good luck to both of you. Back then a doctor, a GP, would just inject it with novacaine, lance it, and squeeze. The painkiller injection was painful enough to make you nearly pass out. But nowadays every little thing has to go to the operating room and a surgeon. And people wonder why healthcare costs so much. Also back then, you could find doctors who would tell you how to cure things without surgery and that's what I did. A surgeon told me that for the rest of my life, I had to keep myself fastidiously clean back there, that I had to wash with soap and rag and that I had to feel around back there to make sure there was no debris after defecation and wiping. I was 19 when he told me this, I'll soon be 56 and it has never happened again. Toilet paper is the number one cause of this problem, especially expensive soft toilet paper that shreds and rolls up in balls. We use only Scott or some of the cheap industrial brands available at wholesale buying clubs. The tougher the better! Many internal and external protocols should stop this and my first thought would be iodine and DMSO right now. But if it's gone totally rancid there may be no time to avoid the surgery. The surgery is nothing but lancing, they just open it up and drain it. Back then they did not sew it shut, they left it open to drain and heal slowly. Don't know what they do now. Dr said even with surgery it is reoccuring sometimes. We have handled the 'flare ups' here for about 6 months. I never thought to use garlic juice. I am just in a panic here over surgery. I am also concerned about the pain and that he will have to use narcotics but I will not deny him of course. Thanks for your reply. I did ask him about it last night...but when he described his surgery, decided not to share his experience! However -- he had a serious pilonidal cyst...it was not caused by toilet paper!...and required surgery. It was not a pleasant experience & he couldn't sit down for quite a while and I can still see the scar -- but the problem was cured -- no complications. The use of narcotics in the hospital is usually standard directly after a major procedure, but only for a day or two - I've been put on a morphine pump for 1+ days - then it's pills. It's been shown that patients heal better & more quickly with proper pain medication (they can rest and aren't always thrashing around) directly after surgery. Unless your entire family are drug addicts going to AAA - there is no reason to worry about a day or so of narcotics. The thing I would be most worried about would be being in the hospital itself! Just be extra vigilant about everyone washing his hands and using sanitary methods when working with your son - even you- while you're in the hospital. Good luck - whatever you decide. Well it does to me as I have 3 other boys here and if it is preventable I need to know. Your point about TP is interesting. This gentleman is my one who griped when I bought Scott - he wanted the soft kind. I have been buying Angelsoft which does ball up. I already know I am more worried than he is and my husband. I was kinda rude to my hubby yesterday because I gave him the 'you are not showing your emotions' speech lol He just said - he will be fine. My son said 'Mom you think too much' Obvious they both know me well haha You have made me feel so much better. I will get a new shower head. Thats a great idea - I of course can not think so I did not think of that. About the packing stuff.. I have not read about that. Where can I purchase this? I do not care how much it cost. While I was sitting there in the surgeons office I was thinking -- is this about money for her? This is MY BABY and I told her that. I am worried about the hospital itself like you said - I will be vigilant - trust me.lol I know this same child was in the hospital when he was 6 weeks old to rule out sepsis which was neg. While he was there he was in Isolation. A nurse came in and went directly over to him and picked him up. I immediately went into almost a rage because she did not scrub first. She apologized and left. 2 weeks later he was readmitted with viral meningitis. No - no drug addicts here but allot of drug pushers are in my area. I worry everyday about it. Pills are like a new currency here. I hate it. Also I live in the meth capitol of the world (E KY) Thanks for your reply. If that didn't make it go away or look like it was trying I'd sit on my infra-red LED. I'd also prolly be using a godzilla about which you'll learn on the microelectricity group (it sure worked quickly and effectively on a couple of tooth infections). I can't tell from all that's written if it's drained or open--I think you said there was a gross sinus. It is black and smells like a tar pit--looks like black petroleum jelly. It's also inexpensive and available at drugstores OTC--another reason for a large bandage. This stuff is easier to get than Bentonite Clay and will draw out infection and any causative matter that may be lurking in the sinus. Follow the directions on the box. I used ichthamel and peroxide sits baths on a Bartholin gland cyst for which the proscribed treatment was surgery. No recurrence. I had a serious one a few years ago; I got a mirror so I could see what I was doing, sterilized a safety pin, and poked the area. The pressure forced most of the liquid out (blood and pus), a little finger pressure similar to popping a pimple or boil, got more out, cleaned the area good, and it was gone the next day. If I feel any discomfort in that area now I cut a potato slice the right size and if there is any thing to draw out the potato will do it. Its gruesome but expedient and cheap. Many cysts will fill up again as the body uses that route to deposit that route and place to deposit. Over the years I've had a couple of yellowjacket stings and they collected stuff for many years. Toilet paper just doesn't do the job 100%, no matter what kind. Its just easier wipe the area with a damp washcloth after using the tp. (I get 30 for $5 at the dollar store). Dr said even with surgery it is reoccuring sometimes. We have handled the 'flare ups' here for about 6 months. I never thought to use garlic juice. I am just in a panic here over surgery I am also concerned about the pain and that he will have to use narcotics but I will not deny him of course. Thanks for your reply. When i was young i use to get this Pilonidal Cyst, and my mom use to put garlic juice on, the pain was horrible for couple minutes and then it will pass, and then she would paint the area with Iodine. I still get Pilonidal Cyst now and then but with the first pain i start the treatment and it goes away. So i suggest garlic juice, iodine 4- 5 times daily, hot compreses to help open the and drain the sore. Tee tree oil, cayenne tincture or cream, and more garlic it stinks but it does the trick. Hopefully this will help your son if you choose to go the natural way. Good luck to both of you. Hugs Mary - Kathy oleander soup Friday, March 26, 2010 11:47 AM Pilonidal cyst This may be Ot for this group -sorry. I am devastated here with the news my 14 yo son has a Pilonidal cyst. Good grief it is one thing after another for us here. Dr says he absolutely has to have surgery - it is pretty bad. He has him on Bactrim right now until we can get into a surgeon. He first complained of this last summer but we thought it was just a boil so we treated it as such. We took him to the Dr clear back in Oct. and the Dr said it looked like it was healing and did not seem concerned He has had several 'flare ups' which I now know is normal. This thing is really gross and he also a big hole which is referred to as a 'sinus'. I am scared to death for my child to have this surgery - everything I have read says extremely painful.
