Hello there ! I am very happy to join your group

I have been intrested in the Oleander for some time now but never tried to make

the soup .I moved some months ago to an island on the eastern side of Greece

very close to Turkey . The island is filled with Oleader trees so i have

decided to make the soup for the first time .While i am writing this i am

waiting for the soup to cool down .

My question is is it necessary to add the alcohol perservative? And if i do not

add it how long will the extract last?

Is it necessary to refrigerate the extract even if i have added the

preservative?

Another question is can i use the extract while i am using MMS ( chloride

dioxide ) ? I am on a protocol using the MMS and i am having good results but i

was wondering if it is not a good idea to use the extract and MMS at the same

time since i have red that someone should not use MMS with antioxidants or

immune stimulants.

Thank you ,

Kostas

Hi Kostas,Welcome to the group. To answer your question, yes, it is necesssary to add the preservative. The soup will not last long at all without it, and it is really not necessary to refrigerate it. Keep in mind though, if you feel any numbness or tingling on your tongue and/or lips, it is a sign that the plant has been sprayed by pesticides. If that should happen, discard the soup.As for using Oleander and MMS, I don't believe that it is a problem, but as I am not very well versed with regard to MMS, I will let Tony or Marc jump in with the answer to this question. My Best,

I tasted the extract with the peservative ( vodka ) and felt a little numbness on my tongue afterwads. It is most unlikely though that the plant was sprayed .I gathered the leaves from a wild plant .

I put some drops under my tongue and left them there for 1-2 minutes.

It also tasted very bitter , Maybe the numbness is caused from the added alcohol ?

Thanks for the help

I would think numbness could be one of alcohol's side effects. You cant really say that if it feels numb it was sprayed by pesticides. Most veggies / fruits are sprayed...i've yet to experience any numbness...

Most fruits and veggies are not sprayed with malathion, whereas most nursery plants and a large portion of landscape plants at homes are sprayed with malathion.

If anything had malathion applied either directly to the plant or to the soil, you will very likely feel numbness when you touch it to your lips. And, regarding numbness, I definitely feel numbness on my lips and tongue when I eat some of the produce from South America that you get at Walmart in the winter.

Who knows what they spray and use down there? The joke on the American consumer is that many of the chemicals banned here have been imported to Mexico and South America and then we get the same poisons we thought were banned back in our imported produce. Grapes, blackberries and blueberries are three examples of Walmart items that I have noticed cause numbness.

That is why it is a good idea to go organic or at least local if possible, and if not to wash your veggies in a water/H2O2 solution to at least help get rid of the chemical crap on the outside of the fruits and veggies. By definition, organic produce is not sprayed - though the lax organic qualifications do not mean that there are not pesticides and other chemicals remaining in the soil, or that they do not drift or wash over from adjacent non organic crops.

Kostas, where are the wild plants located? Are there by a highway or anywhere near where they could be sprayed? Here in the US, even way out in the country, the county sprays plants on the side of the road.As for the bitter taste, if you mix it with juice, it is palatable. Hold a little bit under your tongue for about thirty seconds, where it is absorbed faster. There are also no taste buds under your tongue. Then, mix the rest in juice, such as pomegranate or grape juice. Make sure it is 100% juice with no fillers. That should cut down substantially on the bitterness. My Best,

Dear

I will ask and find out about if they are sprayed but i do not think that this is happening . I live in a small island in Greece no one cares about the wild plants here .

I do not get this numbness when i hold the extract for just 30 sec so maybe it was from the added alcohol

Just make sure that no pesticides were sprayed on the plants Kostas. Better to be safe. I do not recall feeling numbness from the alcohol. But if you tried it without the alcohol and felt nothing, maybe that was the reason.

Yiasou back Kosta.

And no i dont think the the plants have been sprayed especially in Greece, as the plants are put there just to look good and to absorb the polution from the Highways. I'm sure the numbness or tingling was from the alcohol mixed with the bitteness from oleander.

One more think Kosta, do not gather your oleander from the freeway as is full of car polution.

Ande yia

Tony is right, wash the produce with H202 solution, you may add baking soda

because it makes dirt slide off easily, i suppose it would do the same with

chemicals. Rinse real well.

I posted a few months ago on this issue. I made two batches of oleander soup

from plants I know were not sprayed - ever - and both batches produced numbness.

One batch came from my brother's property where the only things that are

attacked with poisons are those that get into the house, and the other from some

friends who are organic everything.

Some of us may react with numbness for some reason. I don't think alcohol would

do this as drinking a glass of wine does not cause numbness.
