My mother has been addicted to pharmaceuticals for decades first tranquilizers

like Valium and Darvocet and now Xanax and painkillers. She is neurotic and

unwilling to make much of an effort to improve herself in any way. She is

seventy. She has always been destructive to everyone around her not only

herself with her addictions including cigarettes but lashing out at people and

draining the family's finances. I would like to first reduce her destructive

behavior towards those around her and later help her improve herself. We don't

have the means to pay for an expensive drug treatment program, and I don't

believe there is much government assistance to treat drug abuse. What social

services are available for drug treatment? What is the best method to get

someone off of drugs without costing a fortune? Thanks for any replies.

Would recommend reading books written by Dr. Peter Breggin. perhaps your

library could obtain a copy. Or google his name to determine if any of his

writings are on the internet. best of luck. the benzodiazapines are reputed to

be the most difficult from which to withdraw.

are you uk or us? I'm guessing us because if your uk I could point you towards

services. And yes you can't get people off valium particularly on your own as

the withdrawals for someone your mother's age can be fatal if shes been taking

the pain killers for a long time {people often hallucinate and suffers fits

during withdrawals , this gets worse the longer the addiction}

I don't want to scare you but I felt you needed to know how potentially serious

it can be.{I work in psychiatric care so I've seen lots of withdrawals in my

time}

I would also suggest that you may need a doctors help anyway because of the

description of your mother's behaviour sounds like there may be some underlying

issue {were there any traumatic events that triggered her pain killer use?}

The problem when someone is in the grip of an addiction is that yes they don't

want to help themselves because they don't see it as a problem, they are not

viewing their behaviour objectively and there's really no point getting angry

with her {yeah I know, thats very easy for me to say!}

Think of how your mother is interpreting it.. I suspect it's probably giving her

an excuse to say to herself 'I've got all these things wrong with me /all these

problems and they just don't understand/care' {I know it's not the truth but

when people are addicts their thinking is very skewed towards the addiction}

She won't change until she feels she needs to and sometimes the only way to do

that is to sit someone down and say to them ' I love you but I don't love the

way you're behaving or what you're doing to yourself and us so I can't be around

you until you change'

I know how hard this is but you need to look after yourself as well {I'd also

look at whether there are ways you can restrict her access to shared family

finances}

To get off drugs, take as much magnesium as possible. This is easy if you take

magnesium oil topically. Also recommended are Lugol's iodine, baking soda, and

niacin in the form of nicotinic acid (the flushing kind).

 

To get off nicotine, lobelia root or magnolia leaves are recommended.
