This newsletter has two very long and somewhat complicated stories. The

first is reprinted from the Orthomolecular Society, and is important as

Vitamin D has been underestimated for a long time. Many diseases and

problems, both physical and mental have been either caused or assisted

by a deficiency of this important vitamin. I believed for many years

from my studies of vitamins that 400 IU of vitamin D was a " limit " of

safety, and only fairly recently, I've learned better, and now take 4000

IU per day. The difference in my 83 year old (living in the sun

damaged) skin has been dramatic in just a few months of use.

The second is very important to anyone connected with autism. At last,

the US Government is admitting that vaccines (mercury) are at fault.

Thousands of autism families now have legal recourse. Please pass on to

any family that has autism.

Official Recommended Intake for Vitamin D is Too Low

2,000 IU/Day or More Needed for Optimal Health

by William B. Grant, Ph.D.

(OMNS, Feb 19, 2010) Vitamin D has been a natural part of man's

experience forever, and 90% of vitamin D is derived from solar

ultraviolet-B (UVB) irradiance. The health effects of vitamin D can be

and have been determined from a variety of studies including ecological,

observational (case-control and cohort), and cross-sectional studies.

Vitamin D helps both to prevent and to treat chronic diseases including

many types of cancer, cardiovascular disease (coronary heart disease,

stroke, etc.), congestive heart failure, diabetes mellitus (types 1 and

2), osteoporosis, falls, and fractures. It is also effective against

infectious diseases including both bacteria and viral infections:

bacterial vaginosis, pneumonia, dental caries, periodontal disease,

tuberculosis, sepsis/septicemia, Epstein-Barr virus, and influenza type

A such as A/H1N1 influenza. The autoimmune diseases include asthma, type

1 diabetes mellitus, multiple sclerosis, and perhaps rheumatoid arthritis.

Pregnancy outcomes are also adversely affected by low serum D levels.

40% of primary Cesarean-section deliveries in the United States are

linked to low D levels (9% of births in the United States involve

primary C-section), and preeclampsia is also linked to low serum levels

of D. In regards to cancer, vitamin D helps cells fit into the organs

properly or commit suicide (apoptosis), and also reduces angiogenesis

(new blood vessel growth) around tumors and reduces metastasis. For

metabolic diseases, the mechanisms include increased insulin sensitivity

and insulin production. For infectious diseases, vitamin D induces

production of cathelicidin and defensins, which have antimicrobial and

antiendotoxin activities.

Due to current lifestyles in the United States, most people do not spend

sufficient time in the sun to produce the higher serum D levels

associated with optimal health. Black-Americans are particularly

vulnerable to low levels due to their darker skin, which reduces the

amount of UVB that reaches the 7-dehydrocholesterol in the lower

epidermis to produce previtamin D. Black-Americans have a 25% higher

mortality rate than White-Americans, and this difference may be

explained in terms of lower serum 25(OH)D levels. Solar UVB is an

excellent source of vitamin D during about half of the year. The way to

take advantage of the sun as a source of vitamin D is to expose as much

of the body as possible without sunscreen near solar noon, the time when

one's shadow is shorter than one's height, for 10-30 minutes depending

on skin pigmentation, being careful not to turn pink or red or burn. (

Supplements represent an efficient way to obtain sufficient vitamin D.

African-Americans should consider taking 3000 International Units (IU)

per day while White-Americans should consider taking 2000 IU/day. The

current dietary guideline, approximately 400 IU/day, was based on the

amount of vitamin D in a spoonful of cod liver oil, which prevented rickets.

There are few adverse effects of vitamin D. With whole-body exposure to

the sun, one can make at least 10,000 IU/day in a short time. Adverse

effects such as hypercalcemia have been found in general only for

20,000-40,000 IU/day for very long periods. However, those with certain

diseases such as adenoma of the parathyroid gland, granulomatous

diseases, lymphoma, sarcoidosis, and tuberculosis, should limit their

vitamin D intake or production due to the fact that the body's innate

immune system produces too much 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D in the serum,

which can raise serum calcium levels too high.

Several studies have examined how much mortality rates and economic

burdens of disease could be lowered if the population had more vitamin

D. These studies were for Western Europe, Canada, the Netherlands, and

the United States. They generally found that mortality rates could be

reduced by about 15%.

During pregnancy and lactation, women should be taking about 6000

IU/day. The current US " Adequate Intake " recommendation is a mere 200

IU/day. Bruce W. Hollis and Carol L. Wagner, Medical University of South

Carolina, recently completed a randomized controlled trial vitamin D

supplementation for pregnant and nursing women and found that even 2000

IU/day was inadequate, and that there were no adverse effects with 6000

IU/day.

*Government Concedes Vaccine-Autism Case in Federal Court - Now What?*

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/david-kirby/government-concedes-vacci_b_88323.html

**

After years of insisting there is no evidence to link vaccines with the

onset of autism spectrum disorder (ASD), the US government has quietly

conceded a vaccine-autism case in the Court of Federal Claims.

The unprecedented concession was filed on November 9, and sealed to

protect the plaintiff's identify. It was obtained throughdividuals

unrelated to the case.

The claim, one of 4,900 autism cases currently pending in Federal

" Vaccine Court, " was conceded by US Assistant Attorney General Peter

Keisler and other Justice Department officials, on behalf of the

Department of Health and Human Services, the " defendant " in all Vaccine

Court cases.

The child's claim against the government -- that mercury-containing

vaccines were the cause of her autism -- was supposed to be one of three

" test cases " for the thimerosal-autism theory currently under

consideration by a three-member panel of Special Masters, the presiding

justices in Federal Claims Court.

Keisler wrote that medical personnel at the HHS Division of Vaccine

Injury Compensation (DVIC) had reviewed the case and " concluded that

compensation is appropriate. "

The doctors conceded that the child was healthy and developing normally

until her 18-month well-baby visit, when she received vaccinations

against nine different diseases all at once (two contained thimerosal).

Days later, the girl began spiraling downward into a cascade of

illnesses and setbacks that, within months, presented as symptoms of

autism, including: No response to verbal direction; loss of language

skills; no eye contact; loss of " relatedness; " insomnia; incessant

screaming; arching; and " watching the florescent lights repeatedly

during examination. "

Seven months after vaccination, the patient was diagnosed by Dr. Andrew

Zimmerman, a leading neurologist at the Kennedy Krieger Children's

Hospital Neurology Clinic, with " regressive encephalopathy (brain

disease) with features consistent with autistic spectrum disorder,

following normal development. " The girl also met the Diagnostic and

Statistical Manual for Mental Disorders (DSM-IV) official criteria for

autism.

In its written concession, the government said the child had a

pre-existing mitochondrial disorder that was " aggravated " by her shots,

and which ultimately resulted in an ASD diagnosis.

" The vaccinations received on July 19, 2000, significantly aggravated an

underlying mitochondrial disorder, " the concession says, " which

predisposed her to deficits in cellular energy metabolism, and

manifested as a regressive encephalopathy with features of ASD. "

This statement is good news for the girl and her family, who will now

be compensated for the lifetime of care she will require. But its

implications for the larger vaccine-autism debate, and for public health

policy in general, are not as certain.

In fact, the government's concession seems to raise more questions than

it answers.

1) Is there a connection between vaccines, mitochondrial disorders and a

diagnosis of autism, at least in some cases?

*(note from Dr Bate)* -The article goes on with discussion about

mitochondria and other possibilities that are of interest to MD's and

scientists. At the top is the URL for all of this article.

There is a law called Occam's Razor that states " one should not

increase, beyond what is necessary, the number of entities required to

explain anything " . This means that the simplest and most reasonable

explanation is usually the correct one.

In the case of Autism, I believe conclusively that mercury and/or other

" heavy metals " destruction of brain cells is the overall cause. It is

the result of our pollution of the soil, the water, and the air with

mercury and various heavy metals that are increasing in the human

population. Women are gradually increasing in mercury toxicity, and a

pregnant woman shares these toxic minerals with the developing fetus.

Our current culture lacks the mechanism to rid the body of these

minerals because of the lack of vitamin C. 65 million years ago, we

primates lost the ability to manufacture this out of glucose (blood

sugar), As a result, we are subject to bacterial and viral infections,

and cannot get rid of these mineral toxins easily.

While the pregnant woman has a liver and brain blood filter system that

mostly prevents mercury from getting to her brain, and she can live

fairly well with this increase, the developing fetus has a much higher

percentage of this toxicity, and breast feeding (conceded to be best of

all) actually may increase this mercury level.

After birth, the baby is just below toxic levels, and is barely

controlling, with the small liver capacity the blood level of mercury.

Now, along comes a huge amount of mercury in vaccines, and this small

already overloaded liver simply cannot handle it, and mercury gets to

the brain -- autism is the result of this brain damage. This is the

simple scenario I've been " pushing " for years now.

The increase of mercury pollution in the world corresponds to the

increase of autism. From 1 in 10,000 cases 50 years ago, it's now down

to 1 in 60, and going lower. For a simple, cheap and effective way to

prevent autism, Click on the " Dr Bate's Articles " link in the bottom

right of any of my web page orange headers, and download " Autism

Combo " .. (It also has a 4 part Autism Therapy that is showing good

results with autism).
