Guest guest
Dangerous Detox: Part I By: Dr. Aurore Adamkiewicz, Beyondnaturalmedicine.com You know the feeling that comes on January 1st-bloated, queasy and feeling guilty from holiday treats and delights. A detox might seem like a logical solution but let me explain why your New Years Detox might be doing you more harm than good......and help you put your detox into perspective. This will be a three part blog series. The three words that make up a dangerous detox are these: kidney, kidney, kidney....I am not " kidney " you ; ) Most commercial supermarket and health store detox packages are nothing but a smorgasboard of incompatable body shocking herbs. While many may contain some kidney ingredients like uva ursi, parsley or cornsilk-this is quite insignificant when mixed with stronger more powerful colon and liver herbs like casgara sagrada, una de gato, milk thistle and senna. I have yet to see anyone in my office with perfectly healthy kidneys, children or adults alike. Children with dark circles and the tell tale " kidney " bags under their eyes, arthritis, gout, edemic weight gain, back pain, asthma, high and low blood pressure and diabetes-just to name a few, make up most of the weakened kidney population. In school we learned that kidney failure during a detox is one of the worse scenarios but even getting more sick and gaining more dreaded weight are other possible scenarios. I have an interesting story to share with you: My 75 year old relative, whom is extremely medical minded and not at all into natural health recently bought a $100 detox on a cruise ship because she gained weight from all the different medication she has been taking. The cruise ship personnel told her that in order to loose weight there is only one way-detox. I wouldn't argue with that statement however they were addressing a group of elderly people. Because elderly people are in their catabolic/vata stage of life, which should be a time of nourishment- a detox, which " takes " from the body can be extremely dangerous and even imprudent. With the elderly population, in natural health, one can hope not as much for a cure but for management and prevention...in this way, allopathic and naturopathic intentions coincide. My relative has been plagued with kidney problems for years such as arthritis, bloody kidney stones, and puffy weight in the abdomen. Her husband also intended to go on the detox-is 81 years old and was born with only one kidney, he also suffers from kidney overload: lower back pain, high blood pressure, excess abominal roundness and puffiness. I attempted to talk her out of it, being that the detox kit was mostly harsh herbs for colon and liver-all mixed together. I don't know if she will take my advice but this type of mentality is common place. It is both sad and strange that one lives in the medical realm for years, oblivious to one disease after another piling up-and finally weight gain is the thing that prompts one to leave the medical realm and get help naturally. However, these people are not educated enough in natural health in herbs, or even in anatomy and physiology, to help themselves through a detox. The message here is- don't go it alone, work with a naturopath doctor and get a detox that is individualized for your age and constitution. Your body will thank you for it!
