Essential Oils for Liver Health

There are many essential oils that have been recognized both medically and

traditionally for supporting liver health. We will review which oil singles and

blends are helpful to liver health as well as look at the research that exists

for each oil showing how it aids the liver. First I will provide some background

information on what essential oils are, how they work, and how to choose which

ones to use.

Essential oils are the aromatic liquid that is derived from plant material such

as the leaves, buds, flowers, or roots. It is very concentrated essence of

plant- it takes 5,000 lbs of rose petals to make about 1 pound of rose essential

oil! What makes this aromatic liquid useful to our health is that each oil has

its own naturally occurring chemical constituents. In fact essential oils, were

some of the first medicine available to mankind and they have been used since

about 4500 BC and many are often mentioned in the Bible. There are over 70,000

different kinds of molecules in plant oils, many of which mimic the molecules

used by our bodies for support, maintenance, and regeneration.

CAUTION: It is essential that you use ONLY Therapeutic Grade essential oils! You

need to use therapeutic grade essential oils to ensure safety and optimal

results. Many essential oils sold use chemical methods of extraction that may

leave traces of undesirable chemicals behind. Therapeutic grade means they are

safe and that the naturally occurring compounds contained in each essential oil

product are of the highest and most consistent bioactive levels. I suggest Young

Living Essential Oils because I know they produce results from personal

experience.

Fennel essential oil " helps support the digestive function, which is a major

part of the liver in producing the enzymes necessary for good digestion. It is

an antiseptic and a tonic for the liver. It also helps balance

hormones. " (Reference Guide for Essential Oils, Leatham and Higley) Research

shows that fennel essential oil protects the liver from some toxins-

" Hepatoprotective activity of Foeniculum vulgare (fennel) essential oil (FEO)

was studied using carbon tetrachloride (CCl(4)) induced liver injury model in

rats. The results of this study indicate that FEO has a potent hepatoprotective

action against CCl(4)-induced hepatic damage in rats. " (PMID: 12727504)

Geranium essential oil " helps with hormonal balance. It helps with gallbladder,

liver and kidney functions. It helps discharge toxins from the liver. It dilates

biliary ducts for liver detoxification. " (Reference Guide for Essential Oils,

Leatham and Higley) Plant extract from Geranium have been shown In vitro and in

vivo to have anti-hepatitis B virus activities! (Antiviral Res. 2008

Aug;79(2):114-20). Geranium extracts can effectively inhibit the occurrence of

liver metastases carcinoma- the spreading of cancer to the liver from other

areas. (PMID: 19445132)

Rosemary " is a cleanser and detoxifier of the blood and liver. It has been used

for hepatitis and cirrhosis of the liver. " (Reference Guide for Essential Oils,

Leatham and Higley) One study reported that rosemary selectively induced CYP and

detoxication enzymes- part of the body's strategy to dispose of potentially

harmful substances by making them more water-soluble. (PMID: 11498267) " The

potential hepatoprotective and antimutagenic activities of the rosemary

ethanolic extract and essential oil, respectively, are attributed to the

presence of a relatively high percentage of phenolic compounds with high

antioxidant activity " (PMID: 10719582.)

Chamomile " is a cleanser of the blood and also helps the liver reject and

discharge poisons. It is anti-infectious. It also aids with gastritis, gall

bladder, and liver problems. " (Reference Guide for Essential Oils, Leatham and

Higley) One study suggest that chamomile could contribute to the prevention of

the progress of hyperglycemia and diabetic complications. (J Agric Food Chem.

2008 Sep 10;56(17):8206-11. )

Helichrysum " may help blood cleansing, chelate metallics, detoxify and stimulate

the liver cell function, stimulate pancreas, reduce tissue pain, and regerate

tissue. " (Reference Guide for Essential Oils, Leatham and Higley) The

anti-inflammatory and antioxidant activities of Helichrysum have been

established in various in-vivo and in-vitro experimental models. (PMID:

11902802)
